Civilian and the company will only ship one vehicle out. What to expect and how to prep for the change in location would help?

I shipped a Tacoma from Long beach for just over $1100. If your cars are in good shape and you plan on staying, it may be worth it to ship the 2nd car at your own expense. If you plan to sell your Tacoma, bring it here to sell it because they bring a premium price on Oahu.

As far as what to expect, cost of living is very high here. Also, most people moving to the island are shocked by how small the houses are and how little storage you have. Depending on where you live, a lot of housing has only a carport or no covered parking at all. Beyond that, closet space is generally limited so do your research before you ship all of your belongings out. Storage is probably significantly cheaper in CA than here.

If you live near the water, expect everything you have outdoors to rust from the salt air. We lived just off the beach in Kailua for a few years and went through a BBQ grill every 12-14 months.

Also do some research on where you'll live in relation to your workplace. Traffic on the H1 is a major headache from just before 6:00am to after 8:00am and again from 3:00pm to 6 or 6:30. It can easily add 30-45 minutes to your commute or well over an hour if there's a major accident.

Typical clothing here is shorts and slippahs (flip flops). You can dress up with nice slippahs and an aloha shirt and go almost anywhere.

i read a few things about the gun laws, from my understanding they are about the same as CA and i must register them with the local PD. Is there any restrictions on compound bows?

So, on msn, Hawaii made #1 again as the most expensive state to live in, followed by Alaska, Connecticut, New York, and then New Jersey.
It's not for everyone, but its home for me. Also a lot of people seem to visit and never end up going back home, ahaha!

the "hang loose", it's a friendly gesture.... like when you go wassssup or you see someone you know on the road or if you walking away from a convo you just had with a friend.

    no prob.

when I was in NY we did that to the mime, he couldnt tell what we were doing and all he could come up with was mimick the shaka as a cellphone. lol. Back in high school, we were warned it could be considered a gang sign, so it could result in suspension or ca t participate in school events. We had a lot of new teachers from the mainland and ive seen and im sure a lot of them experienced culture shock.

Cost of living is how you perceive it to be. Being "born-and-raised" I don't know any other way.. When people comment that it is so expensive to live in hawaii, I can't really relate. Maybe we won't go to as many movies, maybe we don't spend a crap load on frivolous things, but we live pretty comfortable and happy. And what is for sure is we have toys here and there, but maybe not a weekend "trail-only" rig like some of our mainlander tacomaworld brothers out there. As far as gas is concerned, yes it is high, but other parts of the mainland is pretty high as well. I was actually shocked last trip to wine country that Sacramento gas was just as bad as it is here.

    2 items:
-Was going to to CA in Feb and overheard a couple from Arizona talking to another couple. They were commenting that the Mililani walmart was not that different from the prices in AZ (on certain items of course - excluding milk..lol). They were also commenting that the Walmart in Alamoana was more expensive than the Mililani Walmart. I know for sure that the Costco in town is more expensive for Sardines than the Kapolei Costco.
-Was just thinking this morning on how Costco is a great place, but is also a great place for you to spend money on a bunch of stuff (food wise) that you really don't need. Growing up, I don't ever remember my parents buying a bunch of spinach artichoke dips, and other things we just pull out of the fridge nowadays.

If you like the ocean you will be right at home.. If you like the outdoors/hiking, you will be right at home. If your GF likes spending all your and her $$ shopping you will be right at home..lol.. When driving, not NEED to shaka, but at least wave "thanks". Be humble and enjoy being able to experience a place that some people dream of vacationing to, but will never be able to afford the trip.

When you think of moving? You got a place to move into already? Your GF have a job lined up as well or she just gonna sit at home all day?
