    Just bought a 1990 King cab 2wdl, with auto and a 2.4L 22RE
The engine has 236,000 miles and makes some noise. My mechanic adjusted the valves (it had a misfire and lower compression in one cylinder 130/150 and it runs good now.
He suggested I use 20w50 high mileage Castrol oil to give better protection to the engine, also said the I might use Lucas Oil Stabilizer to better protect my valves and lifters.
Does anybody have a better idea or will this suggestion work.

I wouldn't bother with the lucas. Changing your oil and filter on a regular interval is all that is needed. Enjoy your truck. Its got a lot more life left in it.

If it were mine it would get a oil with a lower "w" number to get oil up to the head sooner. I know you are in So California, but most engine wear occurs in the first minute of running after a cold start. I would probably use High Mileage oil in the 10w-30 or 40 grade. Don't use any additives as the previous poster said, it's just snake oil.

If it was really mine it would get two oil changes with Maxlife 10w-30 at 1500 mile intervals, to get unknown crap out of the engine, with a good quality oil filter with a silicon anti-drainback valve, then go to whatever suits your fancy.

Also when your truck was new Nissan's were King Cabs and Toyota's were Extra Cabs. I know, I am OCD

My bad on the cab designation-need to get into the correct mode. I choose Toyota might as well go all in.
I changed oil the day after I bought it; I asked for 10w40 they didn’t have it so I got 5w40. There is an oil leak from anyone of the oil pump seal, oil pan gasket. There was one from the valve cover but that was solved when they adjusted my valves. I figured I have to change oil when I got the other stuff repaired in two weeks.
Agree with your thinking of changing again in 1500 miles I am going to do so after the repairs-and use an OEM Toyota filter-saw a comparison on this website.
You make a good point on the lower viscosity, I thought 20w would give me the extra protection, did not think about start up. Good news is that my oil is clean after 80 miles.
