Your clutch can and will go out, ask me how I know :anonymous: it's easier on it in a higher gear.

That really, really, really depends on the bike and how much speed you can get up. I use 2nd for most bikes.

A lot of bump starting success depends on whether or not your bike is fuel injected or has a carb. If a carb, just get a good push down roll down a hill and pop the clutch in 3rd/4th gear. Any lower and the gearing is fighting too much of the engine and there won't be enough leverage to crank it over, you are going to just skid to a stop.

If you are fuel injected, the battery needs SOME power to bump start it. If the brake light kicks on when you press, then you should have enough juice to pressurize the system and run the fuel pump.

Wow, I remember when everyone used to call a jump start a boost. Haven't heard it in a looooong time.

Also, buy a $20 battery tender from Walmart or wherever. Hook that bad boy up to your battery when you park. It will prolong the life of your battery and keep it in tip top shape.

I also pop it in second gear. Also, if its electric start you can give it some juice just as you pop the clutch. Has worked for me anyway.
