With the rails stored, it does not effect the MPG's too much, so just leave it on. If you carry anything of substantial weight (over 100 lbs) then these are not the racks to use other than infrequent use. Remember that while the cross bars are aluminium, the rack base is plastic, so you need to tie down any long loads front and rear.

Honestly... I can't tell you. My tires "howl" so much that I can't hear it if it does make any noise. If it does, it is nothing like my Yakima racks did.

Next time I take out the Kayaks I'll take a pic. The rack is stable enough for the 2 kayaks without the bow / stern tie downs but I use these. Even though they fold down they "do" make excessive wind noise even when folded so I leave them off when not being used.

*EDIT* I forgot to add... If you have the factory XM radio and leave the cross bars out it does interfere with the reception just a little bit. Not too bad but something you should know if you do have it.

Oh... and it states in the owners manual that you are "not" supposed to drive with them unfolded. Don't know why but that is what it says. I have driven with mine like this for almost 2 years with no issues.

I vote "Put them on". I just installed mine and added at least 15 horsepower and I'm getting 2.3 MPG better on the first drive.

(before someone gets their panties in a wad, the above is meant to be humorous. Other than installing the roof rack, none of the above is true)

Tacomas look awesome with the rack, I think it finishes em' off, and makes em' look more rugged.

I've hauled a 3 person plastic canoe on the OEM rack no problems at 60mph for 140 miles round trip. Didn't even notice it was up there, minus the awesome shade I was getting.

Yes, I installed myself and they are not perfectly flush, but fairly close to it. Only notice it right up close. The molded washers that came with it will prevent any water damage.

Yes, I installed them myself and they fit snug on both sides. I did nothing special, just followed the directions and torqued things down to spec.

When I installed mine I used duct seal along with the provided washers. In fact I think the washers are made of duct seal. I think some of the mounting holes go through to the cab.

Do the racks diminish gas mileage quite a bit?

Used to think they were not cool looking made it look to bulky then i bought one (idk why i guess i said the hell with it i might need it?) and now i think it looks naked without one. quiet when closed retarded when open but hey i guess some noise is expected when you mess with the aerodynamics? mpg so far haven't really seen anything different and dont run with them open to notice the mpg. Do it you'll love your truck just a tad more if possible
