I did this fix last night along with the East Coast Gear Supply Bushing and new axle. I drive a bunch of gravel roads and the washboard drives me nuts. If I slow way down it pisses me off more, so I just blast on through them. My truck handles fine but the steering wheel knocks left and right. Makes me feel like I'm driving a piece of crap! I was browsing and saw the zip-tie fix so I added that to my repair on the front end. (btw- everything up front is tight. Checked it and rechecked it. The only slop is in the steering shaft.) I grabbed a few different sized zip-ties and went to work. I had some huge industrial ties that I ended up using. It slipped in with ease, so I put another one in it. Two big ties! It didn't eliminate the knock but it helped it. It made me wonder if it was so loose because of the roads I have to drive? Wish I could find a "true" solution.

The bushing and new axle by the way, made a world of difference in the roar at lower speeds.

I did this a few weeks ago. Can't believe how simple a fix and what a big difference it made. Makes driving the thing enjoyable again.

Just stumbled across this, as I've been recently annoyed by my steering column rattle. I tried to think of something better to use than a zip tie....but I couldn't come up with anything! Simple, cheap, should be fairly durable. I'd estimate that it eliminated about 75% of the rattle in my truck; it definitely dampened it anyway.

    Thanks for the tip!

It should. Give it a shot, I don't see how it could hurt anything. Does anyone know if there is a replacement bushing available that could replace the crappy one that is currently in there? The bushing that is currently used just pops right out.

Does this apply to 2013's? I would assume so, but thought I'd check!

    Thanks,

    Thanks for the info.
I have had this loose steering feeling when driving on gravel roads many times. I crawled uner the truck and never could find anything loose.
It seemed like it was in the steering wheel area.
This is my problem, I haven't tried the fix as I'm not really bothered by it, I'm just happy to know what the issues was...

    This is a great forum.

what would happen if you i was to weld the plate to the shaft so there wouldn't be any play?

Sometimes if I'm cornering hard on pavement and take an S-turn, when I saw the wheel from left to right, I hear and feel a pop in the steering column. I wonder if this loose bushing is the cause of that.

I haven't had this truck long enough to take it off pavement, I have another truck for that, but I might have to check this out.

Somebody actually did that and it worked. Mine does this too but I actually couldn't get a zip tie wedged in there. It's annoying but not hurting anything.

I had my truck at the dealer for the third time for this complaint. The second time they replaced the intermediate shaft with an updated part. Since that was replaced it still made noise going over bumps. I took it back this last time and they said there was another updated shaft. I was not sure it would help, but might as well do it. Surprise surprise. I have not heard the noise any more and I even did some very harsh fast off road driving in Colorado.

I was able to get 2 zip ties in mine. the second one was really hard to do. I don't know why no one has made a metal plate instead of the POS rubber one that causes the issue and weld the cylinder that shakes? would that not work?
