I grew up driving lifted early Toyota's with big tires, 4.10's and 100 HP 22R's. I thought those got around fine. I'm more than happy with my 4.0/auto and I had an 05 with a 2.7 5-speed too that was perfectly fine. And I actually average over 21MPG with my 4.0/auto 4x4. Mileage isn't bad at all for a truck. I've towed car trailers with these too just fine.

Well, I came from a Hemi Ram, an LT-1 and a Lexus IS350.

    That's all I gotta say. :(

But I think my truck is pretty darn cute! :)

I'm ok with what it has. I don't haul a whole lot, and when I do its not far or up to many hills.

With that said, yesterday is the only time I noticed it wouldn't be bad to have a little more under the hood. Went on a biking trip with a couple of friends. So it was me and my buddy in the front. Mine and his wife in the back seat, plus my 1yo in his car seat. Mine and my wifes bike in the bed, with my 1yo's bike trailer. A couple bags with gear and packed lunches. And I'll count all the crap I have jammed behind the back seat storage and what not. So a pretty fair amount of weight. We hit a couple of long steep grades on our way to bike and I had to get on it a couple times to keep it up to speed going up those hills. So, that's probably the only real time I noticed it having a hard time keeping up.

Other than that, like I said, I'm good with what it has. I'm no speed racer. Most of the time I have my kids in the truck, and drive like an old man.

    this and that...
i have both iterations of the 1gr (13 taco and 13 4r). the new gr doesnt feel anymore powerful. if anything it feels more "sluggish" cause its mated to an auto trans. as for power, its good enough for what its designed to do.

That would be awesome, and it would be even more awesome if those ponies actually came alive when my foot hit the pedal, instead of waiting for the drive-by-wire system to figure out what it wants to do.

Bullshit throttle response in these trucks.

I don't know about the new taco but in 2004 the weight to hp and weight to torque is better than tundra and the smaller v8 F150. I had 99 F150 V8 4.6L 2wd and 04 F150 V8 5.4L 4x4 I feel the taco has more power.

    4.7L V8 32-Valve, DOHC 240 hp 315 lb-ft

I'd love to know what HP you think it should have......

It's definitely got more than enough power for what it is.

This thread is actually kind of dumb. The Taco clearly has more than enough power for it's segment in the market.

Why even ask the dumb question in the first place????

    good power IMO
i own a 95 tacoma 5 lug, with the 2.4 and manual trans, decent power for the little truck, not a race car, but that's not what it's designed to be
i got to drive my cousins 04 pre runner with the 2.7 and auto trans, power felt the same as my 95, and i prefer the manual over the auto
my 03 3.4 4x4 feels a little sluggish, but it will makes the tires squeal under hard acceleration (like merging)
i got to drive my sis's 08 pre runner with the 4.0, very good power IMO, pretty easy to squeal the tires if you aren't careful

I'm sure your elevation has a lot to do with that, but my 2.7 is a virtual freight train compared to the 22RE in my '94.
THAT truck was a dog. Rock solid reliability, but a dog.

Yea i am no longer living up at 6500 feet i am now around sea level. Being high in elevation would kill the power. My 2.7 was a dog in my opinion, my other truck is a 56 ford with a 460 big block and in the other truck is a 383 stroker injected, so i am used to massive power. though about changing the cams, retarding the timing, and changing throttle body and intake manifold.

i think the 4 cylinder should have the same power as some of the other 4 cylinders have on the market like Subaru or the bmw.

THIS! I would not mind more power though. could get more power with a supercharger but don’t want it bad enough to spent the almost 4 or 5k on one.

My 2013 T/X Baja has a bit more power than my TRD 4.0. Gets about 1 more mpg as well. Toyota says the catback exhaust is worth about 10 more hp. But both were fine with me.

I had a Cummins before my Tacoma, so yes, the Tacoma feels VERY underpowered.

That is one of the reasons I like it! They have "most" of the kinks worked out in it and it is pretty much bulletproof. It's easy to work on and personally it has enough power to do what I want it to do. Add to that I regularly get between 22-24 MPG and I'm happy.

Count me in as a fan!

This, I have the blower and would I want more power, of course. Say the same thing about my bike sometimes as well.
