96-2004. Nine years, and each one has its charm.
Its all a matter of preference, looks, and whether one offroads or not.

I prefer the 98-00 models, and even though I have a '99, I think that there were a few technical improvements that make 2000 a bit better.

I usually go for the last model year of a run. Hence my 2011.

I like my 02 :). It looks sexy, it's a doublecab, and it has throttle by cable. And only two computer systems. Engine/transmission, and airbags. Less to go wrong

What year? The one you own!

    Why? Pride of ownership!

But seriously, they are all great and it depends on what you are looking for in a Tacoma. I love my 04 dc for the room, but also love our 03 Xtracab with the standard and 4x4, so maybe it depends on the mood you are in and what you want to do with the truck...lol.

2002 because they are last of the purely mechanical throttle system.

They are all tough as nails. I personally like the front end of the '97, but the 2001-2004 are probably the most refined/advanced.

This was really interesting guys. I really loved my Black 1999 and it actually hurt when the dealer told me the frame was "Gone". I haven't had a vehicle to drive in just short of a month now and just can't bring myself to settle for anything less than a GEN 1!
Really hoping to find one in black so I'll just keep on looking!

I really liked seeing what you guys have in Gen 1's There are really some awesome ones.

I really don't understand. I have an 03, but I can still use the throttle even when my truck is off. I really think I have a regular throttle.

You have a cable up to the throttle body, but it's not physically attached to the butterfly.

    agreed.

    2000-2002.

Refined enough, very formidable, no abs (awesome, cause ABS is awful in snow), and still cable throttled (drive by wire sucks)

The one thing I don't like about my '03 is the ABS. Otherwise, love it.
