Sleeping Platform - 2x6's or 2x8's

I never thought of making the panels that way? Good idea

 

Followed this thread's lead today and built the following in about 3 hours. So easy, so simple, and so sturdy. Thanks to all!

 

How did you finagle horizontal boards in there? I bought horizontal cut first, but couldn't squeeze them in under the topper, since the boards are longer than the tailgate opening.

Did you perhaps take advantage of what appears to be a highrise topper?

 

looks good, nice and clean do you plan on storing things underneath?

 

How much weight would those notched out sections support? Thinking of building a platform for my snowmobile and I can store my ramp underneath.

 

The highrise probably helped, but more so we used the space created by the open windoor on the right side to rotate the boards into place.

That's the plan! ski's, boots, or anything wet and dirty underneath. Thinking about installing removable bins or drawers next for camping & cooking supplies.

I have no idea. It barely bends with about 350 lbs on it, but the snowmachine would probably require some extra support from underneath.

 

What kind of camper is that? It looks like you have two different style windows. If it is, that's brilliant. Never thought about that. And passenger side in case you pull over on the side of the road. I like it!

 

Yeah, it's a leer 180 with a slider on the driver's side and a windoor slider on the passenger side for the reason you mentioned. If the windoor sliders weren't so expensive I might have put them on both sides, but I like how much more screened ventilation the regular slider provides over the windoor slider.

 

How are folks notching the 2x8's? My bandsaw isn't tall enough, and my hand saw makes an absolute mess of the job.

 

I used a tablesaw and a sliding compound mitre saw

Is there a way to have a hole cut out for an ARB fridge?

 

Yeah, or I could just throw a tarp over the back, and just have the fridge pulled out on the tailgate

 

Not sure it would fit between the rear cross bar ( 2x6 or 2x8 ) and the tailgate

 

It will be mounted on a slide and will pull out like a drawer onto the tailgate. So I can keep it dismantled till I camp....

Just successfully hauled 30 sheets of drywall above 2 shaped pressure treated 2x6s in the bed notches. Pretty much did what OZ-T did, but just used a file to take away enough material on the corners of the wood to get it to fit - like a glove! I didn't notch them.

Total weight was 1176lbs, so just under 600lbs per 2x6. They bowed down a bit, but not bad. I didn't even need to put a sheet of plywood underneath.





I'm very happy about the bed notches in our second gens. Get some full-size truck functionality for ten bucks worth of lumber.

 

Holy shit , that's a lot of weight , like 1500-1600lbs

I wouldn't have trusted the bed notches or a 2x on the flat with that load

 

Edit : just saw that it was lightweight drywall
