I think its not that bad, I have an AC prerunner, so its one of the lightest versions you can get with the V6. Came almost even with my friends 2003 Wrx (stage 2) and came dead even with my friends 2007 Honda Civic Si. I guess you gotta drive it a little hard.

The low end torque seems a bit low. My Moms' GX460 4.6 could get up to 80 without me even realizing it, because it never gets beyond 2k rpm. Merging onto the highway is a hell of a lot easier in that thing since you don't have to bury the skinny pedal. Though that isn't a very fair comparison, but its the only other Toyota truck motor I've had the opportunity to try. Throttle response is pretty terrible too, but that's something I've gotten used to with all the 2000+ Toyota/Lexus vehicles I've driven.

Yep, with a few exhaust mods I could keep up with my friends Si in my 4.0 4Runner. Course, that's driving with the pedal pretty much dropped to the pavement.

Ahhh, thanks. 270hp would be nice lol. Power really don't seems all that bad so long as your not in a hurry. I really wished the milage was better though.

SC w/urd pulley, afe cai, URD LT's, TRD cat back. 375hp. Custom logos, tonneau cover, westin bar with piaa lights, aero force gauges, custom front air dam, Westin step bars.
It should have more zip or better fuel economy for sure. If a full size truck weighing another 1000lbs can get 25mpg's, and put out north of 300hp, surely Toyota can figure out something along those lines. Heck, 50 more ponies and a 6spd trans would do wonders for this thing!

After several attempts to pass 2 cars for 5 miles the other day unsuccessfully, I ordered the SC. When you hit the throttle it needs to GO!

I'd always welcome more power, but my trucks pretty damn quick.

Who were you trying to pass, formula cars or something? I passed 3 cars all in one shot multiple times today. This thing is not that much of a pig!

Even wingin' along at 75MPH, I'm only at 2200, 2300. Its pretty unusual to hit 3K, let alone 2500, in normal driving conditions.

Only if I'm in one big-assed hurry will I come anywhere near that RPM.

    This!

I can make passes I probably shouldn't even attempt in a Scion with 103 HP at the crank. Also runs 3k RPM at 65..

Yes and no. Two ways I think about it:

    1) Underpowered for a 4.0L in a standalone sense. No two ways about it. Should be closer to 300 than 200 with that displacement.

    2) Adequately powered for a light truck. Before you bitch about it being a dog, maybe rev it up to where the power ratings are. At 2700-3000rpm, doesnt take much to get pushed into the seat. Plenty of power for its application.

It's useless to compare it to bigger/smaller engines cylinder wise. You mean it doesn't pull like a twice-the-displacement diesel?? It blows a 100hp, high mpg econobox out of the water?? (Don't mean to pick on anyone, those were just the examples I thought of.) It's a light truck. Not a sports car. Not a Mack diesel. It has its niche.

I had a F-150 with 300hp with horrible gas milage (at the most 15mpg city, 18 hwy) in Colorado, then I went to a tacoma 6 speed manual in Germany/Georgia with 17.5mpg city, 19 hwy. I love my tacoma hated the ford, it has enough power for what I need.

Seems fine to me. I haven't towed anything crazy heavy but I didn't buy it to tow 5k+... I pass without any issues at all and when I get on the gas I am impressed with its acceleration. However, I wouldn't complain if it had a little more power :D

There's times I feel like I want more power. In those I put my right foot down a little more and I have what I wanted!

    2.7 4cyl is a total dog. 4.0 V6 is just enough. A V8 would be better.

I'd only want more power if it came with better fuel economy. Which isn't impossible, just more expensive to develop. A 4.0L to 4.5L V8 with direct injection and variable valve timing should be able to exceed 300hp and still do 30MPG. Plus put a big smile on your face.

I've not seen any V8 do 30. What vehicles have that kind of Mpg?
