Remember this, HP is what keeps you moving, torque is what GETS you moving. I dont give a Damn what kind of horsepower I have in a truck as long as I have what I feel is sufficient torque. Keeping that in mind remember our trucks produce more torque than horsepower at about 268-270 TQ. This trucks engine was tailored to tow not to keep moving unlike the FJ and 4runner which are tailored toward a different audience who don't necessarily NEED that towing ability.

Im only responding to your first thought, not all the others just so you know. This is also meant toward the others which are all about horsepower. Society has been brainwashed to believe that horsepower is all that matters for some stupid reason. Well it does matter if you are racing nascar. For our intended applications the torque is more important given that the trucks are heavy pigs and need to oomph to get it moving. It's like the old saying goes:

Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.

Just saying it's possible. Car manufacturers aren't about to actually produce something that ticks all the boxes, it would eat into their precious profits.

One more thought, to those bitching about MPG.. I have no idea what you guys are referring to, as with my DCLB I am easily getting 22-24 highway. Stop driving like maniacs and take your foot off the accelerator until needed. You know, it is okay to drove like a civilized human being every once in a while. It's okay if your arrival time is 3-5 seconds difference. :)

Where's the fun in that. I average 13mpg city and 18mpg highway and if I drive like I'm 90 I get maybe 2mpg better.

I've hit 27.7 MPG on a full tank (17+ gallons) during a work week before.

People bitching about MPG on a TRUCK are very similar to the ones bitching about underpowered, I think. Either in an automatic or they don't know how to drive.

I know I can't get 30+mpg unless I go 45mph all the way home, aerodynamics dictate that. If I were that assed up about MPG, I wouldn't have bought a damned TRUCK, I'd be in one of the faggy Priuses.

I never thought my taco was underpowered. I actually thought it had quite a bit for a v6 in a mid size truck.

Well, to be honest, a fat kid CAN win a marathon...if he stops being a fat kid and trains properly etc etc.

In this case, a 2.7 isn't a dog unless you're the fat kid. Then...well, that's your problem, not the marathons or the 2.7s. So, stop being fat and train correctly and maybe you'd have a shot at winning that marathon!

Yes that is one of the criteria to rate if a car or truck is underpowered and this thread is asking if the Tacoma is underpowered. I'm trying to be real like the OP wanted instead of sugar coating that 2.7L has plenty of power when it really does not.

OME 886x and 5100's all the way around. Toytec AAL. Phillips x-treme vision headlights. 886 reverse lights. Borla exhaust. 20% tint. Hi 6 mod. 285/65/18 Nitto TG on 18" Moto Metal 955's. Airaid intake. Scanguage2.JBA LT's.GC Grill..more to come.
I had a 99 4 door Tahoe, 4 in lift with tires and wheels before my Tacoma...that truck was waaaaaay heavier than my 13 DCLB and still got better gas mileage...not much better but still better...I would gladly take that truck back if I could. Toyota really dropped the ball.

My buddy's 22r race truck is 2nd in points in the MORE series right now. It seems like people are running out of talent if they think the 2.7s are under powered.

Well shit, I'm just gonna go stand in a corner. Kudos to him

Edit: cage could be now that I think about it. Did he do any weight savings type modding?
