They probably would have put it on youtube still.

I have found some to be 450' but can't find that one in the vid. It looks to go from the ground up as opposed to being ontop of a building.

I don't know which is more embarrassing, the stupidity of what they are doing or the fact that they can hardly do 6 pull-ups between them.

okay yeah I was way off. If he is lets say 1000 ft. up and weighs about 180lbs, then it should take about 31.102 seconds to hit the ground.

Sick stuff. Watching that made my fingertips tingle, but I get like that. Side effect of rock climbing.

    This makes my palms sweat:

Thats nuts. I can't help but think that those rocks have broken before, what are the chances of one breaking while a 180lbs man is running and jumping on just the edges.

Actually, he didn't die climbing. Dan Osman's an interesting character and contributed a tremendous amount to furthering climbing safety over the years.

At some point during his climbing career he noticed that he enjoyed the thrill of the fall and the last-minute catch of the rope more than climbing itself. He got into testing the bounds of the equipment rigging up ropes and purposely falling farther and farther.

The draw is that climbing rope only stretches 10%-20%. Bungees obviously stretch quite a bit more and they slow your descent along the way. With the ropes, you're free-falling much farther and are closer to the ground/water/whatever when the rope starts to slow you down.

Anyway, he had set up a series of ropes for a huge drop but was arrested (fines, trespassing, or something like that) before he could actually take the fall. He spent a few days in jail and when released he went out to gather up his gear.

Instead of taking everything down, he decided to take the leap on the ropes since they were already set up. He actually called a friend from his cellphone and was chatting during his decent before the phone went dead.

During his time in jail the ropes sat out exposed to the elements. Weather deteriorates that stuff and changes its properties, and for whatever reason he didn't take this into account.

The shame of it is that he left behind a wife and child and had no life insurance. Bit of a sad story but a really interesting individual. If you get a chance, read Fall of the Phantom Lord: Climbing in the Face of Fear.

When I climbed Devils Tower I asked the guide about that sort of thing. "What are the odds of something breaking off and falling while I'm climbing?"

The response was simply: "The only thing we can be sure of is that with every day that passes, we're 1 day closer to that happening."

It's all part of the game. :)
