I have a TRD Sport and was wondering how much time/money/effort would it be to put locking diff on my truck?

Good question. Being as you have the Auto LSD, and all that VSC stuff, Im not sure what it would entail.

    A few bolts are different.
If I had an auto lsd I would not invest in such a thing.

that being said a Locker is nice in situations where the auto lsd is not up to the task

Like when you are so stuck that locking the diff and crawling under 3mph could get you out.

It'd prob be cheaper and a lot less time to mount a winch...

    Hey,
I've been looking into this a lot since I want locking fron/rear diff on my truck. From trolling this board:
It is my understanding that both the autoLSD and VSC will not be bothered by installing an arb. The AUTOLSD has NOTHING to do with the diff. It detects a difference in wheel speed and applies the brakes to the spinning wheel only. This heavy load on the free spinning tire is supposed to get the diff to transfer power to the other wheel. If you are locked up, both are spinning at the same speed and this should not come into play.

Similarly, I think the VSC is using the ABS wheel speed sensors and managing single wheel rotational speed by applying brakes to maintain vehicle stability. Since neither system does anything with our 'dumb' diffs, modifying them should be fine.

Please correct me if I am wrong, because I am getting ready to buy front and rear ARBs for my rig.

    Cheers

And I have a winch and have had to winch myself hundreds of feet because the autoLSD is useless in soft stuff. It is great on hardpack, the road, etc, but I was VERY dissapointed offraod with it. You can feel it sucking all of the engine power out through the brakes while you continue to not move.

by adding a locking dif. you take out the gear that is in there. replace the LSD or whatever it is you have and add in the ARB locker.
so when your rear end is not locked you have power to only one wheel, you will loose the "auto" part.

and yes, you have to be at low speeds when engaging it, but no, you dont have to crawl while it is engaged.

The AutoLSD shouldn't be a problem with full lockers, although, you sure would not want the VSC to engage with your axles locked. There is a good chance you could end up breaking a rear end/front end component.

The AUTO LSD does not lock. It is a fully open diff. The "lock" comes from the brakes, does it not? Like the e-brake locker 'mod' that we have had to do in the past. (Apply the ebrake to get the open diff to spin the other wheel too.)

    Cheers

The "Auto" LSD is actually electronic controlled and the differential it self is an open diff.

Is this because the VSC would apply the brakes to a front wheel and the extra torque/shock load on the IFS would cause your front to rip itself to pieces?

My understanding of the VSC system is that it is trying to keep you going straight down the road (all wheels rotating with the same angular velocity). If you are locked up it should not detect an 'issue' and therefore not engage the system. ...unless it has accelerometers somewhere?..that could be bad. Anyone have the wiring diagram for the VSC system they care to share?

ok pardon my ignorance. I guess I had the wrong idea of how it worked but I thought by adding a locker you would loose the lsd feature?

oh, and sorry about not ansewring the other parts before.

    Money = $$
Arbs will run you about $900 rear and $1000 front. Add an air compressor, air tank, lines, etc.. you have a good investment in parts.
The install, assuming you have a shop do it, will be fairly expensive since it involves pulling the 3rd member, drilling the casing, etc.

If you are mechnically inclined you can install them yourself and save some cash.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...

mechanical lsd, yes...auto lsd, no....auto lsd like said before is a computer braking specific wheels to try to add traction.

I am not up to speed on exactly how the 09 VSC system works with the Tacoma's, but most all of the advanced VSC systems I have worked with in the past use accelerometers in conjunction with wheel speed, TPS, and steering sensors to calculate there algorithms. If this is the case, I could see a locker throwing the system for a loop.

As for the strain on axle shafts, ring and pinions, the force from brakes being applied independently of each other, which can happen on either axle, and any of wheels, could easily cause enough straight to eventually cause serious issues. (when locked of course)

You have everything right for the prior Tacoma's. They swapped things up a bit for the 2009 limited slip system.

hmm, this warrents much further investigation then.

One immediate question it raises is: What about all of us that have the TPS system off/broken/etc? Wouldn't the VSC either throw an error code or disable itself given the lack of an input? ... off hand, I would seriously doubt that knowing the tire pressure would help the system maintain 'control', UNLESS it detected a blowout and was reading 0psi gauge on 1 wheel. I say that because the system knows nothing about tire size, contact patch, momentum of the tire/wheel (though it could calculate it assuming a basic vehicle design weight which is a BIG assumption), coefficient of friction between the tire and road, etc, etc.

Is there a simple VSC disable mod that will allow us to disable the system so that it won't re-arm over ~35mph? Having asked that, I can not immagine a situation in which I would be travelling 35mph while locked, however, it is conceivable that in the mud or snow the wheel speed could easily get to 35mph with a negligible vehicle speed.

    TPS - Throttle Positioning Sensor

The TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitoring System should have no effect on the VSC
