Where do you hunt around this area? I did some bow hunting on Belvoir (which was an epic failure), and had a friend with a small plot of land touching Quantico. I thought I was shooting a large doe, ended up being a button buck. I think the land dried up and I'm back to nothing this fall for hunting...I've only been in NoVa for a couple years and don't know where any good public land is...

Have to go out into the mountains, or on Quantico base. They are all over the base. But that is bows for me.

For firearms, have to go into the mountains or south.

I went out to Phelps once trying to pull down some squirrels. Ran up on some kids in the woods shooting AR's at birds and trees and creeks. Second time, had an arrow wiz by my dog, never been back.

Sorry to interupt the "killing helpless animals" thread:deadhorse: (just kidding guys!) but I just wanted to make sure everyone knows about the meet tonight at Dogfish Head Brew Pub in Greenbriar Shopping Center (13041 Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy, Fairfax, VA 22033). I will be there around 5:30 and we will be there until 8ish or a bit later if any late shift guys can make it. See you guys there.

I'd love to go and drink beer with y'all....but I'm stuck in a sh*tty country 7,000 miles away for another month. SO, y'all enjoy a cold one for me since I can't.

I would suggest you go through the Quantico training real quick and hunt there for archery and gun season (shotgun from stand only). I retired out of Quantico and hunt....the deer there aren't huge, but the quantity is crazy....antlers are massive too. I only meat hunt fyi. Lot's of turkeys on base too. Anyway, I skinned and buthered my deer before in the bed of the truck (using my roll bar to hang the legs up). That's not as bad as the balcony!! lol. I'm laughing at my desk just thinking of that scene. There is also a hunters group that hunt the backyards of Fairfax...archery only of course. I'll get the site and post if I can remember who they are. you know....this might turn out to be a weekend trip to gamelands/camping! lol It's a lot easier to kill, dress, drag, butcher when you have help.

Damn that angers me! Someone peppered both my dogs back in South Dakota when I was in high school. They both lived, but they were bloodied up a little bit. Never made them gun shy though...they were bird dogs at heart.

Man I love my turkey hunting, too! I've got my mouth call in my truck and I practice cluck'n on my way to work in the mornings. I think I saw more turkey on Belvoir than deer while I was in my stand! I should go do Quantico training and hunt down there...that's a damn fine idea.

Hell yeah it is a ton easier in pairs or more. I just ain't found anyone up here who ain't scared of getting dirty. But I have only been here for a little over a year.

I skin squirrels on the truck bed sometimes, but never a deer. I'm not that good, so to get the skin off right for a blanket I am making I have to hang 'em up tall.

We're all helpless, some just more than others! Oh, and I'm coming out there. Never been to that one before.

I've been out fly fishing in Mossy Creek (Harrisonburg)...if anyone is interested let me know and we can get a trip together. Definitely thinking about archery hunting at Quantico this year as well. If anyone has hunted there before I would love some advice on where to hand a stand.

If I can get out of here (Bethesda) in the next 15 minutes or so, I will attempt to get out there before 7:00pm.

Now that sounds like a damn good time! So my shotgun and rifle are both back at my parents house in South Dakota, but when I get back to NovA from Afghan I'm going to hit up the gun show and buy myself a new rifle and a possibly a new shotgun if I can find what I'm looking for. The guns back in SoDak are both handed down from my grandpa and I would rather just keep them safe at my parents instead of bringing them to NoVa and have something happen to them. Either way, I'm down for hunting, fishing, or just going out to a range and having some fun out of the city.
