I have a 2013 Tacoma v6 4x4 TRD with auto Transmission. 3700 km's. Rolled out of my sloped driveway in neutral and then shifted it into drive. The truck made quite a loud bang/thump underneath when it engaged. Is this normal? It didn't make that sound again when I drove it around for awhile. It often make a little thump when it engages but this was much louder this time. Is this normal?

Sounds normal for changing between gears on an incline of some sort.

Agreed. Sounds normal for shifting on a slope.

Should have gotten the manual ;) haha

I use the emergency brake when on a slope to prevent this.

Why do people call the park/hand brake an emergency brake? In an emergency I always use the service brake.

Because that's just what I do. You know and plenty of others know what I meant. Deal with it.

Emergency as in emergency with your hydraulic brake system. You lose your hydraulics there is a good ole trusty cable to help in this EMERGENCY situation.

Set the parking brake while the truck is in gear, then put into park when parking on an incline. This way the brake is taking the load and not the transmission. Also can't tell from your post but don't shift while moving.

That one I'm sure you knew and didn't do. But for parking on inclines, parking break first, shift into park second. When you leave, push brake pedal, release parking break, and shift into gear.

Yeah that's bad.. later when it creates chunks from too many clunks, you'll regret causing so many funks. Tap the brake and avoid the bump, lest your tranny take a dump and you look like a chump while being stuck on your rump.

As it is written, so shall it be remembered.

Quite possibly the truck was at a higher idle because it hadn't been used since the day before, and I had just started it up.

Thanks for the comments so far. You guys are great! :)

I do a variation of this, when leaving, I shift into gear first, and then release the parking brake.

This works too. Keeps pressure off transmission and on brakes where it belongs.

What the hell is a service brake?

It is an emergency brake because it is completely mechanical and is there if the hydraulic brakes fail. Therefore it is called an Emergency Brake, it is also referred by many as the Parking brake also.

Yea shifting into drive while your moving isnt recommended. the parking break isn't mechanical is because they also go by the name of electronic brake.

I still hear a clunk if I am leaving a steep incline going down.
When parking on the steep incline, I would (Backing up) stop, keep brake down while setting ebrake, then shift into park. When leaving, press brake as far as I can, shift into drive, then release ebrake. Think this same thing was mentioned down below.

The clunk is when I shift into drive, even when my ebrake and my hydro brakes are engaged.

No they don't. The Tacoma doesn't have any electronic brakes.
