Whoa whoa fells. I appreciate the passion of the arguments but I think you took it the wrong way. The whole gun thing was a joke. A bad one, but I wasn't serious. Like I said earlier I wouldn't kill somebody over something insurance would pay for. The most I would have done is threaten them with a baseball bat. I'm pissed but not that pissed. Just don't want anybody to get the wrong idea here.

I would. Why the hell not? My vehicle could save my life. I find someone breaking into it on my property, they take the risk. NC is a concealed handgun state...they take one move toward me and they will pay the price.

Yeah... I imagine that most of the people who said they would, wouldn't actually pull the trigger unless their lives were in danger. Lots of internet-tough-guy going on around here.

So saying it's wrong to KILL somebody for stealing a stereo is 'liberaly green weenie-ism' now? I'm a pretty conservative guy, but I don't feel that a guy busting my window and taking something from my truck is worth killing the guy.

I think we've softened up way too much as a society. I wish we could go back to the days where you could fight a guy without worrying about being dragged into court over it. But KILLING somebody?

You have no idea how hard he works for his money. Just because you work like a dog and don't get paid as much as you clearly think you should be doesn't mean any of us gets paid too much for doing too little.

You should stand up for what is yours... but that's not the same as killing somebody over material possessions.

And where did the child-molester comment come from? Something personal you'd like to share???

I'd love to hear about all of your responsibilities and how they exceed those of the average 40-year-old.

You said the key words there... if they make a move towards you. If you go down and show them you're carrying, and they make a move towards you in such a way that you feel threatened, then you have a right to defend yourself. (Though, you can still do so w/o killing.) That is completely different, and something I think most of us would do if we felt threatened.

Ah good ol bham :D you're very right though....killing someone over something insurance will pay for is stupid. Especially in todays time where you are supposed to give warning shots and if they are running you can get sued if you shoot them. Just because you work out in the sun doesn't give you the right to kill someone although most of the people in bama probably think otherwise. My problem with shooting at a group like that is I remember being a kid and we always had that one stupid friend that would con us into doing things that seemed like a great idea at the time. So the person you shoot could very well be someone that was just along for the ride and at the wrong place / wrong time. But that's completely worth killing them over I'm sure :)

That being said I also live in Birmingham one of the deadliest cities in the US to live in ( #6 if I remember right ) and if someone was breaking into my house I wouldn't think twice about shoot first ask questions later...but that's completely different from taking pot shots at someone for stealing your stereo in an insured vehicle. Just my .02

When someone is "committing an obvious crime", you don't really know what they are going to do. I was assaulted in Houston at a convenience store. He tried to steal a six pack I had just purchased. When I resisted, he pulled a Fing Huge knife and went at me, trying to kill me. When someone crosses the line and commits a crime, as far as I am concerned, they've weighed the risks and deserve WHATEVER they get.

Lots of good info in this thread on how to get yourself arrested and/or sued. Displaying a firearm, warning shots, less than lethal ammunition (like snakeshot), etc., will get you in more trouble than actually killing someone under justified circumstances.

If we all take a step back we all realise that, regardless of the method of punishment/prevention of theft, all of us have no time for the low-lives that steal from us, and/or wreck our stuff. We all have that in common.

We are in unfortunate times... now I'm a 23 year old that might come across as "knowing it all", but alas, I believe that will come at 25... j/k...

We are in unfortunate times. What I mean is, gone are the days when you could punish someone appropriately without getting into as much, or more, trouble than the bad guy. I find this extremely frustrating. When kids steal/vandalize etc. nowadays, no-one seems to take responsibility. My Dad never hesitated to give me a clout and it served as a good lesson (a few times).

People have become far too soft regarding many issues and I don't see it improving. Unfortunately it seems that the views of such softened people are steering our laws in a direction that is more permissive of theft, burglary, assault. If tougher punishments were handed out then (sorry for stating the obvious) these crimes would decrease. Putting drug dealers/murderers/gang leaders/rapists/child molesters etc. IN THE GROUND could be argued to be the best medicine. But you have to convince the bleeding hearts of that fact.

You make choices and have to live with the results, good or bad. This should apply to everyone. It appears to apply to some more than others. I don't profess to know much, these are just my thoughts. Perhaps you'll agree. You might also agree that the words of "Beer for my horses" (Toby Keith and Willie) are a great ideal to live by, but when bleeding hearts get involved, they (unfortunately) remain a song as opposed to reality.

Like I said before, I have no time for low-lives and I wouldn't be opposed to hanging/electrifying/shooting serious wrong-doers. If someone is stealing my stuff, I'm going to try my hardest to stop them.

Wussy. I rather be sued or arrested than be dead or have my property violated. You make you own choices in life. Go run in fear. I can't live like that.

If I live in a state/city that allows me to carry a firearm, and I have a licence to do so, there's nothing illegal about displaying that I have a gun as I walk outside my front door. Say it's on my hip, or tucked in my pants and my hand is on it... not illegal (again, given what I said before).

Now... if it's not legal to have in the first place, then I completely agree w/ your comment.

I agree with you on self defense... but just so I understand you... You'd rather spend most (if not the rest) of your live in prison than let some scum-bucket off w/ your property?

Growing up on a farm the best way to get rid of unwanted people/animals was with a 12 gauge loaded with rock salt. Hurts like a son of a b#$%& but wont do any permament damage.

I had a shop in the city and had kids keep climbing my fence and getting in so I put an electric fence line just under the top of it. Gee I never had a problem with kids breaking into my shop.

It's completely legal to wear your firearm in public.....and completely legal to have it concealed with a permit. What's illegal is running down the road waving it around like a dumbass ;)

I do like the snakeshot idea though....I haven't used any of it since cali and their damn rattlers...might be time to pick some more up.

P.S just because someone doesn't want to kill a kid because he's busting their truck window doesn't mean he's a green, liberal , bleeding heart , weenie , or combine them together like some of the people in this thread. Just means that some of us don't want to go to prison for killing someone over a truck stereo. When people complain about the value of human life going down when a murderer only gets 20 years in prison.....flip it around and look at killing someone over your cd player.....bleeding heart my ass

Good point. That's why I said "punish someone appropriately." Even without killing someone, say just maming them, people have been sued etc. for defending their property. It's the people who suggest that the original wrong-doer is owed some sort of compensation that I was referring to as bleeding hearts. Just wanted to clarify that. I view decisions such as these as undermining the value of justice, when you can break the law and still come out ahead of the original victim. It tips the scale the wrong way, hell there may as well not be two sides on the scale in the first place.

I didn't say a damn thing about not protecting yourself or your property, I was merely pointing out that there are appropriate ways of doing so. These do not include threatening an intruder or maiming him. If you are in the right to pull a gun on someone, you had better use it. Example, shooting anyone with ratshot will a) not stop them, I know, I have been shot with it. b) will open yourself up for a myriad of legal issues.
P.S.- I've legally carried a gun nearly everyday of my life for the last seven years.
