A few days ago I bought my first Toyota. Background- 2012 Tacoma DCSB with 13,100 miles from a dealer.

Doing the test drive I loved it but a few days later I'm thinking the shocks/struts need replaced. When I apply the brakes the front end does a nose dive. Also when you place a hand on the rear bumper and bounce it up and down the truck dances on it's own for 5-6 bounces.

I'm not wanting to modify the suspension I'd like to keep it stock. Would you think the dealership will replace them under warranty?

    Thanks

That is the way the stock suspension works and feels if you want it firmer you need to go aftermarket

Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
If the rear is bouncing 5-6 times, either something is wrong, or the previous owner towed heavy loads and ruined the rear leafs.

My '11 with 40k miles does not bounce when I push on the bumper.

With pushing down a couple times to get it bouncing the whole truck dances 5-6 times after I'm done.

Don't get me wrong I do really like the truck and I'm glad I bought it. I just wasn't sure if this typical for toyota's. I've only owned Fords and Chevy's

Toyota springs are great on their cars, but have been absolute crap for their trucks, mostly tacomas for the most part for at least 15 years, can't handle much weight, it's "dead" steel, won't hold an ARC, will sag & go neg. ARC at shackle & hanger end & this happens even though for most trucks, this would be "normal working conditions , will allow axle wrap, could go on but you get the idea & anyone who tells you different is pissing down your leg & telling you its raining

Your shocks are definintly dead for one can't comment on springs i can't see You should've grabbed some of those Ford or Chevy springs before you sold those trucks....:)

mayb post a few pics of shocks/springs front and rear and the gurus can tell you if it has been messed with or not seems like an excessive amount of wear for the miles

I finally was able to get under the truck for the first time. 4WD- I think your right. All the leaf springs I've ever seen did have an upward curve to them. This only curved at the shackles, everywhere else was flat. Just past the axle they actually went downward. So I think the problem has been discovered.

Tonight I hauled a light dresser and the rear of the truck sagged. Ugh

    Uhhhh.... no.

Your shocks are worn out at least on the rear (do the bounce test up front too). Not sure how the previous owner managed to blow them out so fast but I'd swap them out.

Yeah i know pretty sad, my '83 had real suspension stock, rode like a truck & you knew when you hauled a load your truck wasn't going to be 2" lower than it was the day before

Well after some thinking and talking to some people I've going to follow through with the Dealer's 30 day return policy. I'm returning the truck tonight and buying a new 2013 model. For a few grand more than I paid for the used truck it would be a no brainer just to upgrade and not have to worry about the suspension and the underlying problems that might have caused.

the new one will do the same thing.. i have a brand new 2013 that i bought about 4.5 months ago.. it is a DCSB OR and as soon as i touch the brakes the front nose dives.. it came with the 2 leaf and overload rear springs and those sagged as soon as i put a campershell on it.. i complained until they put the 3 leaf with overload set on there and the rake is almost non existent after 2 months.. I already bought a set of Icons to fix the nose dive in the front and eventually will swap out the rear springs for a set of All Pro Expo's
