i've always wondered the same thing haha. my mechanics teacher said that it takes any evaporated fuel from your tank and turns it back to a liquid or somethin and puts it back. the one in my truck always makes a buzzing sound after i turn the truck off. sounds like a bumble bee under my hood that is really pissed off

 

It's an Evap canister. It takes unburned fuel vapors, and basically puts 'em back in to the gas tank, instead of the atmosphere. It uses a purge pump, which is the buzzing you hear.

I've asked this question on a similar thread - Does anyone know if my canister missing some hoses or is this a 1st generation configuration? I have a 1995 SR5 3.4 v6. The other photos on the site like the one above are newer (a '96 & a '98) so could be different. Would someone please take a look at my canister (pun intended) & tell me if the 'missing' hoses are normal? Thanks!

Top, 1996 I had, lower 2k is the same.

 

This thing right here is what got rid of the buzzing sound once I added it. Mine did not have it on the original setup.

 

I found out that the part missing from my evap canister is the VSV (Vacuum Switch Valve) Toyota Part Number: 90910-12130. I have owned the Tacoma for a year & a half & have been trying to get better than 17 - 18 mpg. Maybe this will do it if I get one? Should I bother? I still don't know what the hell it does and it seems that there may be more than one in the Tacomas. Very little 1st generation insights on the web. Where would I plug in the sensor anyway - I don't see any loose wire adapters. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Maybe hook up a hose from here to here and see what happens

 

Mine makes a buzz every 7 to 9 seconds after I park sometimes. I can't hear it with the hood down and it goes away if I loosen the gas cap and put it back on.

Thanks Mike - good diagram was this for the 1st gen Tacomas? I'm getting different info everywhere I go. The 1996 & beyond seem to have info and this VSV configuration but I cannot find info on a 1995. It passed smog ok.

 

well in your picture you definitely have the nipple for it so maybe they replaced the canister with the wrong one from a newer truck. if everything passed then just cap off the nipple with a vacuum hose cap and call it a day because I cant image it wouldn't pop up a code if you had a VSV and VPS and it was disconnected

Charcoal canisters are on most american delivery vehicles starting back in the 70s I think. My old 71 super beetle even had one in the right side rear fender well. The carbon in the thing absorbs volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the fuel tank and other places to reduce unburnt pollutants from being emitted into the atmosphere. The main issue is that these things use vacuum lines from the manifold and you want to make sure that there aren't any disconnected from the engine somewhere as vacuum leaks in any engine are bad. I'd try to put it all back if it were me, no telling what having the system cobbled up (missing crap) could be doing to your engine performance or mileage or whatever. B

 

For you folks with the "buzz". The little rectangular chamber circled in post #8 was added to later models to cure the buzz. It is nothing more than an empty chamber that provides a dead air space and keeps a check valve from fluttering. It is a well known issue with the previous version.

 

Sorry to post in an old thread, but it is relevant . . .

In the photo I've included (taken from above but with a red indicator circle), where does the other end of the circled line connect? Mine came loose when I was disconnecting the power steering lines, and I don't know where to reconnect it. Pictures are definitely helpful. Thank s for your help in advance!

 

It connects to your buttfer.
