So I got my recon done today and it was a simple and painless process - the paperwork took longer than the inspection! I guess my lift must have looked subtle compared to the guy behind me!

So to answer raycie's (Neil) question from the quote above: "The flare must at least cover the portion directly above the tire." ~per my inspector D.P. (See the red portion in the picture below)

Going in for my recon tomorrow morning.. no offense, but I'm gonna be totally pissed if I don't pass, especially as I over thought my extensions and am totally fine with leaving them on, not like the crazy tires sticking out that they pull off their flares the moment they get their sticker..i don't want my wife to drive my truck and get pulled over for some stupid recon deal if ever in town our Waikiki. even thinking of putting down the 5 bills to get some bushwacker flares for the added .5" which is all I would even need...

More to come...

Passed... guy was super cool.. I asked him if I would pass without the extensions, and if I needed them I would leave them on. he went back out to check out the truck... Passed me without them. They would have been listed as modified fenders if I left them then I would need to always have them for safety...

That sucks.... How long ago did you do your recon??? When I went 2 weeks ago, I filled out all of the mods, and listed only tire size. Guy only actually noted down my bumper heights and made sure that I check the correct boxes as far as original vs. modified.

Not to knock the previous owner, but any chance he (the previous owner) either listed the tire size wrong, or went to recon with 15" rims???

Just asking cause I see some trucks on CL that have tires fully out the fender, but say they have recon. Hope those sellers give the new owners the garden flares to put back on, or the smaller tires they used to pass recon in the first place.

Maybe it had 15s when it was inspected. The applicant writes down the modifications and tire sizes, not the inspector. I passed with 285s on 16s, and now running 265s on 17s. No matter, already got the sticker.

But correct my if I'm wrong, but when you gotta go for safety, if you are not running those 285/16s, then you won't pass your safety if that's what is listed on your recon paperwork. (At least that is what my inspector told me).
He also said, that if I ever change anything that is listed on current recon, just go back down and fee is waived. If I loose paperwork, then that is another story, and I start from step one.

no no no u guys misunderstood. 15" rims cant even fit on a stock 05-13 suspension. When i bought the truck it only had a 3 inch lift and 8k miles on the odometer. It was the guys weekend truck and he never did any major modding. no way in hell he had stock tires on a 15" inch rim for our truck. my stocks are still the toyota 17" rims..

Sucks either way... but my inspector didn't list any info on my sheet.. I wrote everything and he just signed off on it.

So, I've tried reading up on this and haven't come across a conclusive answer...

Do you need recon if you are keeping your vehicle registered out of state?

I'll probably end up calling, but wondering what yalls thoughts were before I did

My inspector commented that is the big mistake some make.. Just because you have a recon sticker, doesn't mean you can just throw on whatever after. If you get stopped and the stuff don't match the papers, you still gonna get a ticket.

You will need a Hawaii Safety Inspection to get your Out of State Permit (to keep your current tags) and be legal after 30 days on island. If you can't pass the inspection, then you will need a recon.

From the Vehicle Reg website:
Out of State Permit - must have the following

• Current Out of state registration
• Shipping document (Bill of Lading)
• Fill out CS-L (MVR) 27 form (out of state permit application form)
• Current Hawaii Vehicle Inspection Certificate

Thanks for the info! I read that too and was a little curious if it was possible to pass safety with aftermarket suspension, I guess the trick is to find a friendly shop.
