285 tires on stock 16X7 tacoma wheels ?

hello everyone. Purchasing 285/75/16 nitto terra grapplers to mount on my stock 16X7 yota taco wheels but the nitto specs reccommend atleast a 7.5" wide rim whereas all other 285 tires from other brands only reccommend 7" wide rims.. anyone know if these nittos will mount correctly and not have issues with my stock 16X7 rims?? also: truck is getting 3" coil spacer/ aal lift to allow for 285 nitto tire....

 

Not sure about the Nitto's specifically, but you might need to look into aftermarket UCA's or Wheel Spacers.

 

285s with stock wheels needs spacer or ucas in order to clear the stock ucas.

 

are you sure it wont clear everything ? i see all these tacomas on here with 285 tires and no mention of uca rubbing or clearance issues. i see that most taco owners with 285 tires have aftermarket wheels like a 16X8, so maybe that's why the 285 tires dont rub? i was just planning on painting my stocker 16X7 rims flat black and installing the nitto 285/75/16 grapplers and thinking i'd have no issues since it will have a 3" lift.... any further input would be great....

 

My 285 nitto TG's rubbed the uca's at full lock with the stock wheels and stock uca's. rubbing problem solved with spidertrax spacers but then I had to trim some fender plastic, problem solved again......

now I got a compleatly different setup no rub at all!!

thanks dark knight... so the uca rubbing is only at full lock so i could live with it for awhile if i had to since its minor? spidertrax spacers? what size and what about cost? thanks...

 

The reason 285s will rub is because the backspacing of the stock wheels is around 5" (or is it 5.5"). You need a zero offset (4.5" bs) wheel with 285s to clear the UCAs.

 

I lived with the rubbing for about 6 months I did have to get 1/4" spacers for the front from autozone to make it work though.

the spidertrax are 1.25" spacers that are $99 for a set of two. most people go with 2 sets to make everything even. Google is your best friend for finding those, they seem to have hit and miss schedules of different people having them in stock.

so, if i put 1/4" spacers that will do the trick? and if i put spacers at all four wheels that will look better since it will look even ? why are the spidertrax spacers 1.25" ? that seems like a huge amount? so if i went ahead and bought kmc xd 16X8 wheels with 4.5 backspacing that would clear the uca's but i may have to cut some plastic or something? thanks.

 

lots of questions here:

Yes, 1/4" spacers looks like it will work.

Putting spacers on all 4 wheels will "even" out the look of the truck.

Not sure why 1.25, but that's what people buy.

Yes on 4.5" backspacing - no spacers required.

No matter what setup, you may have to trim some inner fender plastic to avoid rubbing. The cutting is minimal and not a huge deal.

 

thanks Del , that was really helpful, sorry for so many fricken questions but i had always just installed 32" swampers on all my other lifted tacos and most of that was 1st gen taco trucks and the only rub i entered was from the side of the TSL radial on my frame at full lock and of hot chicks rubbing on me....ha ha .. thanks though. any further input would be great.....

 

thats just what spidertrax offers.....dont know if they have anything other widths for our trucks???

 

yeah, ebay motors has many different sizes from 1" up to 2" and in between sizes for less money than spidertrax. seller named sscramblin sells all kinds for around 59.99 total per pair with everything including shipping. i wonder if i could get away with just a 1" spacer since i dont want wheels that look like they stick out at all from the fender well, since i dont like that look. i like wheels and tires to stay mostly factory looking as far as in the fenders somewhat. also: do you know what these spacer companies are referring to when they say lug centric or hub centric spacers? i have no idea. thanks

 

hub centric wheels let the hub center the wheel. lug centric wheels use conical style lugnuts to center the wheel when you tighten down the nuts

 

so i guess it really doesnt matter which 1.25" spacer i buy whether its lug or hub centric style ? cuz when im looking at these spacers some of them say lug centric and some say hub centric so just as long as either one will do the job ill go ahead and buy the ones on ebay that were 1.25" lug centric wheel spacers 6 lug X 5.5 sold by ebay member sscramblin since they're only 59.99 total including shipping per pair.

 

There won't be a problem having those tires mounted on your 7"w rims, alot of jeepers run 35's on 7"w rims. You will need to run spacers or get lower profile UCAs to address the rubbing issues though.

I used to hate the idea of using spacers, but after some research it seems like those Spidertrax spacers are ok as long as you install them correctly (ie torque the nuts right) and check them every once in a while.

 

no. you will need the hub centric spacer for them to work correctly on your 05. if you get the lug centric ones the current lug nuts that you have will not seat right in the spacer to center it.
