I've been shopping for a cb and antenna setup and found a great deal on Cobra's 148GTL single side band radio at www.factoryoutletstore.com for $129.95 and free shipping. I then scored a dual 4' Firestik setup for $89.95 at www.ftldist.com and wanted to share with anyone thinking of a radio set up. These prices beat Right Channel Radio--which is a great source of info. The SSB radio, for anyone not familiar, boosts the radio's power to 12 watts on the side band channels which effectively doubles the range.

Those GTL's need to be aligned to work well on side band, and they aren't what they used to be back in the day. They are made in China now and have some serious quality issues. Did you make your purchase already?

 Yup. I'm eventually going to get a 2M radio but wanted something for now on trail rides

Don't get me wrong, it's a good radio. It's just the sideband needs a fair amount of adjustment to work like it should, they tend to drift.

Got it--wonder if there's anything that can help with the tuning(?)

The internals need upgrades and alignment. My Galaxy 959 workd ok but it was just peaked and tuned. I had problems with it this year so I have sent it off for mods and upgrades to the circuitry.

I would search Ebay for a cobra 29 classic made in the Phillipines. You would pay alot less for a better radio used. If you are going to go to the ham freqs then SSB would be a waste of money imo.

Damn now I feel kinda schmuckish--I was following info on the Right Channel Radio site maybe not the best info source(?). I guess I figured the cb would be a low budget entry to radio comms before jumping into the $ for 2M and the associated liscensing process.
