I was snipped on Friday, so I'm still a little sore and need to make sure I don't tear the stitch.

A question if I may. I'm about to begin (today really) a diet change and begin a work out regimen to help me get to a healthier, fitter version of me before I'm 30.

I'm 6'7" 285 lbs. Turning 29 in December. At some point I'd like to get a trainer and gym membership but can't at the moment, so diet change and increasing my physical activity will be my main focus until then. I have a Weider universal machine that is mid sized so I can lift weights, but pretty much limited to it and a bar with maybe 60 lbs of plates. I have iffy knees (Osgood-Schlatter disease), and have a back injury so running, at least for now, isn't in my plans. But I do walk and hike, and own a mountain bike. My girlfriend is very fit and always wants to be exercising together with our dog, so I have motivation and partners always.

Anyway, is there something I can use to help burn fat and increase my effectiveness in what I am able to do? Or maybe just a meal replacement something or other to help curb my cravings for huge portions?

My parents are too heavy and I have been big forever. I want to be at a healthy weight with a healthy diet and energy levels before I have children, and I'm worried that if I begin my 30s fat and unhealthy, I'll continue to be that way like my folks.

One question: Why? What's preventing you from even going to a rec center? They are not expensive. And have the equipment you need...If all you do is diet and walk a dog, you're not going to be satisfied with your results my friend.

Starting the diet today is a good idea, but things like eating the proper stuff to assist with burning fat and exercising becomes habit only after a number of weeks...you've gotta stick to it. The more you see results, the more you'll wanna do it, and that comes back to having a place that will help you get to results you can see. Understand though that you won't see these desired results right away but don't let it discourage you!

I am in the midst of moving, vacation, engagement and a new truck coming this week. So my extra time and extra money are tied up. I plan on a gym by January, because of this.

Any kind of resistance training will be good until you can get into a gym. Pull-ups, push-ups, etc. You can even get creative and curl 5 gallon buckets with rocks in them lol. Try to focus on specific groups of muscles each day. For example, I do:

    Mon: chest and tri's
    Wed: back and bi's
    Fri: shoulders
    Sat: legs

Until you can get into a gym, you'll just have to get creative to get a good workout. Also, some cardio will help get your weight down. Do a mile a day or so. No need to run 6 miles a day lol. No workout should be over an hour or an hour and a half. My workouts are around 50 mins.

As far as diet, try to do something you'll be able to do for the rest of your life. Don't do a complete 180 overnight b/c that's only going to last a week or so. Ease into it and try eating healthier, and after a while, it'll be natural. Only eat your meats grilled or baked. Eat plenty of vegetables and only healthy carbs (no white bread, biscuits, white rice, or any other refined white grains...go for the dark, whole wheat stuff). Try to eat 5-6 small meals a day, rather than 3 big ones. Each meal should consist of a meat, a vegetable or fruit, and a carb. An example lunch would be: Tunafish on wheat bread, green beans, and an apple.

When I used to have a trainer a few years ago, he said, when shopping, stay on the outside of the store. Anything on the inside is usually bad for you lol. Anything that comes in a box is usually bad for you. Just try to eat foods that aren't very processed: lean meats, not packaged deli meat. whole wheat pasta, rice, and bread, rather than their white counterparts. Get your vegetables raw and cook them yourself, not out of a can or a bag.

I usually take 1 day a week (Sunday) and go shopping for the week and cook everything I'm going to eat that afternoon. Doing this keeps your fridge full of good food, so you can pack your lunch in 3 mins, rather than getting hungry and stopping by Wendy's or something. You're going to eat what is convienient when you're hungry...might as well make sure you've got good food with you at all times. Whenever I go to school or work, I bring a big ass lunchbox with MORE than enough food for the entire day, so I won't be temped to stop and get chips or a candy bar or something.

Lastly, in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with a meal replacement shake. I take 2 a day. When I'm at school, I have 3 classes with only 15 mins in between each, so I can't eat, so I carry an empty shaker bottle with my protein powder already in it, so all I have to do is go to the bathroom and fill it up!

Thanks both of you. Any powder better than another for protein stuff? Anything to help workouts be more effective?

I will work out, just limited to what I own.

    Thanks again.

Diet should be easy. My girlfriend is hippy and we are both into fresh foods and vegetables. My issue was I was brought up on take out and fast food, so my body still craves that type. But I love cooking and vegetables, chicken and fish.

I just love double bacon cheeseburgers too.

Sooo get up earlier, or go to bed later...if its that important to you, you'll find a way.
My last competition I was a F/T student, manager, husband and father....I still made it for 2-a-days and had every meal prepped and ready to go...excuses don't make results.

I agree with everything you said except for this statement

What's wrong with white rice? Sure, it spikes the insulin levels (even whey does) at a different rate, but it's still beneficial....
I use white potato daily...nothing wrong with it.

Thanks Sean, not trying to make excuses, just being frank and honest. Gym is planned but again, that's January at the latest. This month I've been out of town for 2 weeks, next month will also be out of town for 2 weeks. It isn't feasible at the moment.

I don't eat rice much, I eat farro which is a whole grain. Eggs vs egg whites? I can eat chicken and vegetables all day, too. But not sure what a clean carb is or clean fat. Avocado is good fat, so is it bad to limit my fats to avocado? They are easy to fit into my day. I will need to bulk prep meals due to my schedule, so things that are easier to do that with is great.

I know I sound half derp, maybe more, but I am new to everything I'm asking about, but I am motivated. Just want to be up front with my limitations with a gym. It IS coming. I can work out now and I can do cardio.

I can do much more than walk the dog.

I'm a fan of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Protein. The cheapest place I've found is bodybuilding.com Don't go to GNC...they'll sell you a bunch of shit you don't need lol.

The only supplements I take are protein, creatine, and a pre-workout. I've tried multi vitamins and fish oil pills, but couldn't really tell a difference, so I stopped when I ran out. I have a lot of friends that swear by both of them and I'm not saying they don't have their benefits, they just weren't noticeable to me, so the cost outweighed the benefits.

And as far as working out, just be creative. Your workouts will be as good as your imagination allows.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with a double bacon cheeseburger...just limit yourself to one "treat" meal per week...not a treat day, just a treat meal. If you can make it 6 days eating right, on the 7th day, treat yourself to some of that oh-so-tasty greasy food!

I love potatoes. I'm not necessarily saying white is bad for you, I'm just saying the wheat version of foods have more nutrients and fiber in them than white, since a lot of that stuff is lost during the refining process. Being someone who's trying to gain weight, I eat a lot of potatoes and white rice, since it makes me less-full, allowing me to eat more, but for a weight loss, I'd recommend wheat over white to fill you up and get more nutrients.

Some nation-wide gyms allow you to travel to any of their locations, I believe...I don't know if that's a feasible option for you or not.

The eggs vs egg whites debate goes back to the dinosaur ages lol. Personally, I eat 5 boiled eggs every morning: all 5 whites and 1 or 2 yolks every morning, just because I hate the taste of the yolks, but some people eat the yolks like they're going out of style. Some say the cholesterol in them is bad, some say it's good cholesterol, so it's okay. I simply don't know or care b/c I don't like them anyway lol

Here's a link to all things clean food: (it simply lists clean proteins, carbs, and fats)
    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=130328293&page=1

Not all fat is bad fat...you actually need fats in your diet, just not trans fats, like bacon, twinkies, etc.

White potato has fiber (skin) as does sweet potato. Sweet has more postassium and slower releasing energy (great for pumps and pre workout) both have other micronutrients in it too..
