Traded in first gen tacoma, now for sale at dealer

Traded in my 2004 first gen for a new Tundra last week. I saw it for sale on dealer website this week. Anyone looking to score a sweet first gen with 63,000 miles in the northwest check it out and giver her a good home. Can't believe how much they are asking...

Holy shit they are insane! Beautiful truck in excellent shape but they have to be insane. I doubt they gave you more than 7500 on trade and to think they are asking so much.

Wow, I have seen double cabs listed at that asking price but not any xtra cabs. Low mileage is playing the key factor there.

 

Was looking at CarMax prices on dcabs because I was tired of having a two seater. 16k would buy you something with 100k+ miles in that condition.

19k for 63k miles, I believe it.

 

A little bit off topic, but when given a choice, always sell your vehicle privately if possible. I used to work at a dealership and the markups are unreal....

I would sell my vehicle, pocket the money, and then make a deal on a new vehicle...

you'll always come out ahead....

The link is dead so I assume they sold it in less than a week. They gave me $13,800 on trade in if you guys are curious. I was content with their offer. Kelly blue book retail was ~15k. Selling a car private party is somewhat of a hassel. Yeah probably could have milked a little more out of it but didn't feel like dealing with craigslist, low ballers, banks, etc...

 

I was going to ask what they have you... What a bunch of fucking crooks! I would have gone down there and asked what they did to it that it's worth so much more now than when you traded...

 

When they told you "$13,800 on trade in"....what they really did is play a smoke and mirrors game. They took the money off the sticker price and tacked it on your trade in to make it look like they gave you a deal...

I could go into more detail, but don't have time. I know what I'm talking about.

I'm just posting this for the benefit of others who are considering trading in.

The dealer almost always WINS....anyone who thinks otherwise...well there's a sucker for every seat as Barnum used to say.

Having said that, trading in is convenient...but you pay dearly for it.

 

Only time I traded was last year, my 06 Chevy Colorado for my 10 Tacoma.

I got a good number on it (for a trade that is), having researched it.

Main reason was I had the famous cylinder head failure that the first 3 yrs of that engine had. It was fixed and I got banged for all the stuff the head ruined. It left me very untrusting of the vehicle, and in MA I'd have had to warranty it in some way if I sold it privately. It was worth the peace of mind to know I'll never have to hear about it.

 

That's a good trade value OP. Assuming that you got a good deal on the Tundra also, trading is a lot easier than selling privately.
Also, when you trade, you only pay taxes on the difference between the new car and the trade value. If you sell privately and then buy new, you pay taxes on the full amount of the new vehicle, so you already score some of the difference right there. (assuming the taxes work the same in other states)

Dealers are in the business to make money. So are grocery stores, sports stores, clothing stores etc. We all buy these products knowing the store owners make money off us - that's life. Most of us work in an industry where we are part of that chain; I provide engineering services and make money while doing it.
I accept the fact that the dealer will make money on my trade - that's their right to do so, as long as I negotiate a good deal that I am satisfied with, I have no problem with them staying in business.
The key is in making sure you don't get screwed, because as you have said, the dealers will be the only winners if you let them. I have traded many vehicles and I am familiar with market value, and I don't think that I have ever been screwed - win-win for both parties is the best deal.

 

Dealer came down $5000 off MSRP for the Tundra. I was happy with the deal. Here is the new ride if anyone is curious. Gas mileage is about the same and now I got 310 horses

 

I see there are some "screaming laydowns" out there. Those who have been in the car business will know what I mean.

Trading in is a huge profit for any dealer. Again, I was in the business for some time, and my brother rose up to the top of the sales force in huge Ford dealership. Maybe we don't know what we are talking about?

BTW, my brother never trades in his vehicles...but he does get a nice discount when he buys a new one.
