I drive an 03 tdi and have not had any of the issues you mentioned. Oil changes are at the same intervals if not longer then gas. Never once had a stinky or greasy fuel handle. Diesel is actually 5 to 10 cents a liter cheaper almost all year round until the first 2 hot months of the year. Never had a hard start in cold weather that's what glow plugs and coolant heater is for. I also enjoy getting 950km to 40 liters of fuel, while having 230 ft/t and 135hp on tap (bigger injector nozzles and a ecu tune). The sound of the vnt turbo is also pretty awesome.

I like diesels, I was going to get one when my '07 got totaled last summer, I looked a few really clean ones, used, but very clean. However, knowing that diesels NEED to be worked in order to live, my drive from my house to campus (when in school) is very very short, the truck would never even come close to operating temp, and that would wreak havoc on it.

However, if the opportunity presents itself to purchase another one, and my drive/drives correspond with close to ideal operating conditions, I may purchase one. I definately like the power, they're pretty freak efficient based on size/weight/aerodynamics. The modern diesel is pretty impressive, I just hope as a country we can start to see the benefits of the newer ones and start to implement them. maybe once they become more common place there wont be such resentment towards them, similar to SOME of what is seen in this thread.

take no offense to any of this ^ everyone is entitled to an opinion, its a free country (and canada ;) ) you're welcome to it

 Agreed! I am still having withdrawls having only traded in my Powerstroke 3 weeks ago. The tuning , the power, the SMELL AND SOUND are all the best.

But the cost is they are bigger, Heavier and more likely to break when you start beating them up off road. Then you get hit with the cost of parts and labor which is double a gas vehicle.

With all that said I have fallen in love with this Tacoma, by all accounts it is the perfect size truck unless you need a purpose bulit Diesel or 1/2 ton for load and tow.

Yeah, I'm probably just way behind the times. My experience was with fleet Ford diesels with the IH 7.3l, a couple Isuzu 21/2 ton trucks. Europeans love their diesels, I'm seeing the new car sales are shooting up the last few years, accounting fo 50-70% of new car sales. I think diesel fuel is generally much cheaper there though because it's taxed lower.

I realize these new Clean turbodiesels are efficient units, but I'm kind of meh about them, and I think many other people are also.

Was looking at this South African website http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=16858

Looks like the Hilux D4D 3.0 turbodiesel gets a minimum of ~25% better fuel economy compared to the 4.0L gas. Pretty good. Let's assume 33% better, that would be 18mpg vs. 24mpg. That starts to add up.

I see the engine oil capacity is 7.2 US quarts vs 5.5 US quarts for my particular truck. That starts to add up also, since I think I'd be doing oil changes twice as often with the D4D.

More info on the Hilux http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Hilux

    The D4D is technically the 1KD-FTV, a 3.0L inline 4 turbodiesel.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_KD_engine

"The 1KD-FTV is a 3.0L (2982cc) straight-4 common rail diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger and Intercooler. It has 16 valves and a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) design. Bore is 96 mm and stroke is 103 mm. It generates 170 hp (127 kW) at 3400 rpm, and 260 lbf·ft (352 N·m) of torque at 1800-3400 rpm. Redline of this engine is at 4200 RPM. Compression ratio is 17.9:1."

170HP and 260 torque??? Is that right?

EDIT: Yeah, looks like those HP and torque figures are correct from this review by an Australian outfit: http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-an...oad-tests/toyota_hilux_sr5_turbodiesel_review

why would you be changing the oil twice as often in a diesel? AFAIK and in every instance of diesel i've seen, they can stretch out a little further than their gas counter parts.

are you saying you'd be doing oil change every 2500 (or 1500 depending on your intervals)??

Shoot man, I change my oil every 15,000 miles w/Amsoil synthetic. I'll change the filter every 5000 miles.

Back to that Australian review I linked above: http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-an...oad-tests/toyota_hilux_sr5_turbodiesel_review

At the bottom it has the engine specs for the Ranger, Nissan, and the "Holden Colorado" whatever that is. The Ranger and Nissan get a little more HP and torque out of their turbodiesels.

In any case the Hilux diesel has less torque than the 4.0L V6. Toss on the supercharger for the 4.0 and the I4 turbodiesel has way less torque. And maybe the turbodiesel initial cost ends up costing just as much as the supercharged 4.0L.

Dunno. Up to each individual to decide what works best for them.

Even with lower torque at peak I'm gonna bet the d4d has more torque at 1800-2200 rpms than the 4.0 which is what most of us would be using it. what's the max rpms on the diesel 3100? If rather have more usable torque everyday than more non everyday torque personally and a quick tune will bump those numbers up a bit and if not enough a bigger turbo swap is gonna be less than the trd sc, making room for loads o powa.

    http://special-reports.pickuptrucks.com/2012/01/2012-midsize-shootout-dyno-day.html

You can see the dyno test there shows the max torque band on the 4.0 is around 2900-5500 RPM (redline). Max torque band according to specs (not dyno) for the D4D is 1800-3400 RPM's, and probably pretty flat. Redline for the D4D is 4200 RPM. Sure, you'll get more usable torque from idle on up with a diesel.

The taco must follow! Too bad toyota doesn't hint at anything so we never really have anything to get excited about.

Good, this will hopefully provoke Toyota to bring a diesel to the American market.

Sadly, with the Nissan/Cummins marriage, I'm afraid the frontier is closer to a diesel than the Taco.
