Remember, Toyota has tried and true diesels used in the Hilux. I don't know what they would have to do to prep them for American epa standards, but I can't imagine it would be a complete start from scratch job.

It certainly is not, I wonder if the harsh environments (like the Australian outback and other locations this powerplant is native to) could be cause for shorter recommended OCI, and that maybe here it could be extended.

This could be why your OCI's are halved, you change yours at 3x the distance I do. Which reminds me... "What is this, and oil change for ants??? it needs to be at least....three times the length!!" (zoolander reference)

Depends on several factors all to be decided upon by individual buyers. Low-end grunt diesel is clearly better, MPG clearly better. Diesel is not a mid-high RPM performer like a 4.0l, and no turbo lag with the 4.0.

I just topped up the tank at Shell, got 19MPG with 91 going up and down the Continental Divide several times (not towing), and maybe 20 miles in 4LO, another 10 miles in 4HI. Price for diesel was exactly the same as for 91 octane. So on this particular 10 gallon topoff assuming I got 24 MPG with a D4D I would have saved $11.

So extrapolating those numbers to 100,000 miles, I would save apx $4165 with the D4D compared to the 4.0l.

If there is an initial cost bump for the D4D of $4000, then I would just about break even at 100,000 miles on the odometer.

The wildcard in the hand is the supercharger for the 4.0. You get about 60 more torque out of it than the D4D, and maybe (dunno) a better lowend torque band than the stock 4.0. Of course, the supercharger is about $5000.

So, there's tradeoffs here and there. I probably wouldn't go with the diesel, but who knows???

Diesel is cheaper than regular 87 here in Canada

Bring on the diesel Tacoma or the Amarok

Again a bigger turbo can be had for much less than 5k so I see that argument moot. bigger turbo would also give u more grunt in mid and high(if u can call those rpms. high) range. an who doesn't love a little turbo lag? So... diesel FTW? Ha

Just to be clear there are 7 people with 2nd gens on tw that are completely against diesel, and pretty much everyone else is on board? Just clarifying.

No but we are apparently in the minority here.

Prius owners use less gas than most anyone else (original Insight Hybrid owners dwarf prius, and must be even faggier...).

How is that not a good thing for those that don't need more?

Why is it that a lifestyle that doesn't using fuel wantonly is something to scorn and hate on.

Quite the warped world view where there are 2 kinds of people. Those that laugh hysterically at coal rolling retards, and faggy fucking enviros.

I conclude using less fuel is patriotic, yet we'd rather go to war instead of even considering using less oil. How do American flags on a truck rolling coal on a Prius make sense, unless you love war and pollution, and hate possibly faggy drivers?

What's wrong with a Prius again, besides the non-deadly smug factor?

I'm mostly scared of stupid rednecks getting a hold of the diesel tacos and modding them to roll coal out their bed stacks. The titan is already doomed to this fate.

I have little if any desire to roll coal, so put me in the sane group of diesel fans. My dad has an 84 rabbit, that was my grandfather's before he passed and he gets 40 mpg city and I would love that with a bed. it is gutless but its also a na 3 cylinder. so I would settle for for a truck with roughly the same power my current 4.0 produces that still delivers around 25 city. I don't see why anyone wouldn't. that must mean I'm close minded.

FWIW, I do think the Prius is a freaking horrible car for anyone who even remotely cares about the driving experience. It's simply miserable at everything dynamic.

    There, less queer?:)
