Edit: the lucas I used was synthetic, but it was supposed to be fine with LSD diffs, but I learned my lesson and won't make that mistake again.

I got lazy and had Toyota do it. They charged me a whoping $97.97. I probably would have done it my self if I never got the $40 off any service coupon from Toyota of Puyallup. Definitely will do it my self next time around.

I'm gonna throw in my recent experience. Last year I replaced my rear diff oil + 4oz. of friction modifier, as per the excellent sticky on this subject by Brianr. In the last few weeks i was getting some rear diff chatter as I pulled away from the curb in front of my house. cold fluid, cranking the wheels, i'd get the tell tale chatter. Called the dealership, sounded like a PITA, so I got my truck on a small incline, nose first so there's a bit of room to add some fluid and squeezed in another 4oz. of friction modifier, drove around mixed it up and no more chatter. I don't know if the old stuff broke down or got too thin ? but that solved it. Thought I'd share. Thanks TW!
    Awesome site!

Why use the LSD added to the oil?
We do not have a cluch LSD and the locker on the TRD does not use a clutch....

The 05-08 has a mechanical lsd that uses a clutch pack, hence the additive. 09+ isn't mechanical, no additive needed

Sorry for the threadjack op. I'm sure you could swap axles if you had enough motivation, but that is a bit over my head. I don't think you would tell a difference. The clutch packs can and will wear out, they'd be a bitch to replace. The 09+ LSD will wear your brakes, much easier (and cheaper) to replace.
