So I have a camera in my tailgate, but no mirror. All the wires are there.
I have a temp gauge in front of the radiator but no mirror.
Since Toyota put all these items in the truck but disabled them (I guess to speed up the production), do you think that we have some of the other features also?
Like the Push Button A-Trac (without the pushbutton)
Power converter in the console (without the plugs running into the bed)
    Just a though :D

I dont have one that accomadates the features. =)
All the hardware is there except the Correct Mirror.
I am guessing that Toyota did this to save money by making one production line instead of several so they would not have to re-tool. In the later productions they removed the Cameras and temp sensors and the extras.

hi! tig1 calling, about your camera in the tail gate and no mirror. i bought a 2009 access cab with the same thing, when i approached the dealer, they(toyota canada) told me that the boxes and tail gates are mass produced because so many trucks use them.some one on this site suggested that i obtain the sales sticker that came with the truck. if it came with your truck it should be on it,i'm still fighting to get mine.toyota canada head office e-mailed me and said that it is up to the dealer to supply this info.toyota canada have no control of the trucks once they leave.
    hope this helps later tig1

Yeah...If it's listed on your window sticker or in the paperwork you should have it...but very many features have wire runs or parts related to options that don't come with the truck.
Lots of folks have found the wire for the factory towing package without the terminations and stuff. Tons of things are hard to add after the body is on or whatever...so they put them in every truck and then the units with the options will have all the finish stuff put in them.

My camera is there (So is the temp sensor), I just didn't get the package that had the Rear view mirror with the screen. My dealership evidently loves pre-runners. I needed a 4x4. They had 2 4x4's. Both were plain RegCab 4x4's. All the rest were Access Cabs, and 4D pre-runners and 2wd's.

I'd be interested in finding out answers to those questions as well. Particularly the power to the bed since I will most definitely be using power using devices of some shape or another on the tailgate. But any of that would be great to hear about.

Way more goes into the traction control systems then wires and probes like the situation you list with the rear view camera and console temp/compass. They wouldn't put all the mechanical stuff into the truck, then disable it for certain models. That would be wasting a ton of money on their part by not marketing major features that only lack a button to make them operational.

Again, they would not waste money by putting an inverter in the cab, but not utilizing it with outlets

Sold my 2006 V6 6MT AC Offroad like an idiot.
I was a Land Rover technician for 6 years and all of their cars come with the seat heating elements but not the switch that activates them, front heated windshields on some of them too, the had the plugs and the glass but it was not activated so for the price of a switch and a computer time to activated in the onboard computer you were good to go. So I imagine that toyota would do the same thing, the smaller percentage of cars that are built without the options would outweigh the cost of making special harnesses and part varietys ect. So they make one that fits all and charge more for the ones with the options in the sticker.

So we being smarter than the average consumer, we spend a little bit to get stuff working and not the crazy amount they charge on the sticker price. Just my .02.

There is no inverter under the console if your bed didn't come with the outlet.
Unlike the FJ's, you can't buy the button and just plug it in. Other components are missing that aren't installed.
