Does relocating oil filter voids warranty?

I think i know the answer, it's all depends how shady dealer is who's doing warranty work... Right?

Did anybody has experience, trouble with warranty work after some mod like relocation of oil filter? Did you see any toyota writing about voiding warranty. Thank you.

 

Why would you want to mover the oil filter location? And I'd say doing something like that would void your warranty on your engine but it's hard to tell. That's really up to the dealership to decide what they do.

 

Why would you want to move it, I'm curious? The only time that your warranty would be voided if something were to happen to the vehicle(engine). It would void your warranty if what you had did caused the OEM part(s) to fail. The dealership would have to prove it first. This doesn't seem like a good plan though. So much can go wrong with doing this. Your oil filter is in the easiest spot ever, why change it?

I got an idea. Move your cabin air filter. Maybe you can find a way to stop mice from going in there?

 

You can be almost certain any lubrication-related failures won't be covered under the powertrain warranty (things like spun bearings, seized cams). Unrelated failures (like a bad ignition coil) will still be covered.

Relocating the oil filter reduces oil flow (due to added pipe friction, and head losses if you move the filter higher than stock elevation). If the relocation kit is not well designed, the engine can in fact suffer oil starvation and wear more quickly.

 

Just put it back to stock before you bring it to the dealer for warranty service.

Not exactly very moral, but an option. Not one I would support though.

 

Why bother?

 

Why? The stock location is the best ive seen when it comes to off roading or lowering. No worries about hitting it on a rock or animal. Im sure toyota designed it in a way that is best suited for our trucks.

 

Interesting to see everyone asking "why bother" has a V6. The 2TR oil filter is not in a convenient location.

 

^^^This! The 2.7's oil filter is a pain in the ass to get to. I had one for 12 years. It is on the passenger side above the exhaust through the frame and at arms reach to get there.

 

That is something I wouldn't suggest. Long ago when I had bought my first car the parts guy and I were talking. I had asked, "what happens if someone brings in a vehicle that they modded/crashed etc(customer caused) and put it back together and lied and said it was the manufacture?". He had told me about another customer who use to do rally driving in his vehicle. When something would happen, he/she would put it back to stock and say, "it was a warranty issue". The dealership had did some investigating and found out. They ended up black listing the guy/girls name in the system. So anytime they had come in for any sort of "warranty" work, the dealership wouldn't cover it. Under the law it's considered fraud. You may want to think about that.

I think that's because major of the people on here answering have V6's.

the burden of proof that the damage was caused by your "mod" is on the vehicle manufacturer. Toyota has to prove the relocation caused the failure.

On the V-6, IMO, the oil filter placement couldn't get much better. This truck is the easiest oil change I'v had on a stock truck.

IMHO, you should leave it where it is. Yeah it's a pain, but you risk starving your engine of oil. I'm not sure if the warranty would still cover you if something goes wrong, but I certainly wouldn't go around swapping it back to normal when something goes wrong and lie about it having been there the whole time.

 

While it is true that Toyota would have to prove the damage was caused by the mod, they can still deny the claim and it is up to the vehicle owner to sue. And I am sure Toyota has some VERY good lawyers and engineers on their side.

 

It's also now documented here(TW) that you "could" change parts back to stock if there was a problem that arise from customer(your) error.
