I find it very hard to believe that through the wealth of knowledge and resources available on this site that the shutter and vibration issues haven't been diagnosed with a definitive fix. It seems like, from what I've been reading, some get it and some don't. Some people have fixed it one way and others try the same thing and still have the shutter. Seems like this anomaly needs its own thread with some definitive answers. I am still saving up for the rcd lift kit currently. Even after I get the funds for it I may not pull the trigger until something concrete comes in the form of a fix all for this issue.

What's the down side to going with an RCD lift vs an Icon stage 2? It's about the same cost but your only getting a 3" lift with the Icon. Is the Icon better quality or better for your Taco?

I've skimmed through it...does it actually work? Has it worked for more than a few people that you know of? I havent heard of too many people doing it...If its a definite fix then I'm
    on board all the way.[/QUOTE]

Its basically engineering your drive-line back to near factory spec after lifting. Requires some playing around with to get it right. I wont attempt it until after im done building my suspension, if that's even possible, lol.

i don't have either lift but from what ive read and seen on the site, the icon is a coil-over kit that basically modifies the stock suspension, while the rcd kit is a drop bracket kit that moves the entire suspension down with new cross members. 2 different ways of achieving lift.

Im sure both are well made lifts, just depends on your needs for the truck.

Yeah I found a lift definition guide at TacomaHQ yesterday. I was thinking of going RCD for the extra height and no rubbing. But I might want to jump some sand dunes. From what I read on this forum and TacomaHQ it sounds like the down side to this lift is the high center of gravity and low ground clearance. The best lift for off roading sounds like it might be the coil pack and leaf pack. On Toytec's site it says the icon is adjustable to 3.5 inches and the Dakar leaf pack is a 2.5 inch lift. That should give me a full 3.5 level lift I'm thinking. Little bit higher lift than OME, better chance of not rubbing and better lift for off roading me thinks. Any thoughts out there?

I've got an icon / camburg / dakar lift and I like it. The only thing I don't like is the camburg UCA's make a lot of noise even with greasing the bushings but I just deal with it. If I could do it again, I'd go with the RCD but thats only because I have really no need for the mid travel kit that i have. Either lifts are good choices. The Icons will be better for offroading. The RCD will give you the option of running 33's without having to trim much (or all?). You'll have more travel with the Icons though.

The downside by cranking up the coilovers to 3.5 is now have preload resulting in a stiffer ride and your angles on the cv joints and tierods can lead to premature wear. Alignment issues can also come into play.

I've read that a UCA replacement will fix the alignment issue. I read that the Icons have a better ride. Not sure if there is a fix wight the CV joints and Tierods. But thanks for the info. I was wondering what the downside was to cranking the coil overs to max. I'm kinda stuck here on which lift will suit me better. I'm not gonna do rock crawling, just dunes and mud pits. I really like the look of the RCD better, but I keep seeing that drop down brackets low center of gravity and I'm wondering what I'm gonna hit with it.

Uniball UCA's will def fix the alignment issue. As far as the CV axles...nothing you can really do about that. A diff drop won't work for the 2nd gens like it will for the 1st gens. It only rotates ours which can cause more issues I believe.

Most lose site of the method used to achieve the lift when considering performance. Icon, King and Fox are all great shocks with performance in mind, however to achieve lift using Coilovers you are actually taking from the down travel of your truck. Now each one of these Coilovers come set to about 2.0" - 2.5" (optimal setting from manufacturer). When one wants more lift they are loading the coils up even more forcing their suspension down providing the truck with additional lift. Though great and all the height of your truck can be adjusted with COs, but this takes from the performance of the shock (dynamics of coil response over shock valving), consumes even more available down travel and causes strain on your entire front end.

With the DB lifts you are you are not taking from the down travel of the truck, you are instead using the bracket to reposition various mounting points (talking vaguely) so that your suspension travel remains consistent with that of factory all while achieving a lift. This equates to a great ride as your suspension is for the most part able to move as intended.

With respect to performance one could easily purpose that by taking a high performance coilover and using it to achieve a lift you're actually negatively affecting the suspension as a whole and thus gaining no better performance at all. I mean sure the shock itself is better and a lot more capable then say a 2.0 Bilstien, but a shock and coil are not the only pieces of the puzzle when talking suspension.

Basically if you want performance, buy high end shocks and keep your truck nearly at the same height it is now (don’t go over the 2.0” – 2.5” setting on the CO), you want some good height (3.5” – 6”) and a good ride consistent with that of factory, get a DB kit. You want height and performance, this is going to be very difficult to achieve with a 4x4 and chances are extremely expensive.

Good info. Thanks. I may go with the RCD. I like the height and the off roading I do will be minimal. We go camping a lot by the Pismo dunes and there are a couple of off road parks a short drive from my house. I'm thinking I could get by with the RCD as long as I don't over do it. I've never off roadbed before though so it's a tough decision.

Ok I over reacted! I know people on here are in the same boat that Im in. Just wish there was a solution to the shutter and vibes. I was told to get a one piece tom woods drive shaft next to cure my problems. Gotta wait till I get the cash first. Whew this is an expensive addiction lol. Thank you all for tips and solving these solutions. Has any one had any luck with tom woods one piece dive shaft????

I've done some research and from what I can tell, the Beefed taco Carrier Bearing drop does wonders.

Did you try flipping your carrier bearing? I did it and my vibes are only on take off at around 5-8 mph then disappears. No shutter at stopping. Kinda weird that you get it during stops too.
