Anyone use Shell Rotella T Synthetic

Yes.
It is the '07 TRD sport.
T6 keeps the engine clean, & is great for MPG.

Rotella is great oil.....I work for a major fire truck manufacturer and its what we use....I have used it in my last truck and my bike......I am currently using 5-30 mobil 1 in my Tacoma....but I will make the switch to rotella 5-40 next change.....you may lose a tad in gas mileage but its probably not enough to consider.....its still a 5w so cold starts wont be a issue....don't see any issues with it.

 

Excellent, thanks for the reassurance. Where is your fire truck factory? My dad retired as a FF a few years ago in California. The trucks sure have come a long way since 1921. I switched from Mobil 1 5w-30 and lately, maybe just because it's fresh oil, it feels and sounds a lot smoother
I'm really peticular when it comes to sounds and can tell when something is off, but in this case it seems better.

I'm likely wrong here but I thought the second number (30 or 40) was the one that had to do with temperature?

Both numbers have to do with temperature. Basically, a 5w-40 behaves like a straight 5w when it's cold so it flows well on cold starts. It behaves like a straight 40w at operating temperature.

I posted back in 2011 that I was using Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 in dirt bikes, Tacoma and other cars. I still am using this oil in everything except for a new Mini Cooper S. The Cooper has a European spec that requires a BMW oil that is required for warranty.

 

how many miles you got on the truck? trying to determine if i should run this or not.

Run it now.
It does not matter when you change over to full synthetic.

 

X2 Just do it. Its a great synthetic oil. I run it in the Tacoma , Honda Civic Si, CRF250X dirt bike , DRZ125 dirt bike, two CRF50 dirt bikes and a Garden tractor.

 

Been Running Mobil one since 40K.

 

Mobil 1 is good. I run Shell Rotella T because I cant run Mobil 1 in the dirt bikes and its nice to have one oil for (almost) everything

 

Just ran across this thread again and am about half-way through my first T6 oilchange. I'm planning on going 10,000 miles with this synthetic between changes. I've ran it in my 2004 STI before I sold it and I'm planning on using it in my 2004 TJ (4.0L)

I witnessed reduced oil consumption with the STI and it tolerated the higher temperatures better than the Mobil 1 I had been using before that.

For what it's worth I'm doing this for 2 big reasons. It's a single oil I can use for everything from my 4.0L Jeep, 4.0L Taco, 2.5L STI and my dad's 2006 Duramax. It's fairly universal for that reason and appears to actually be a good oil regardless of that multi-purpose use.

 

I use it and have been for 80k+ miles
I change it between 6-8k with a new OEM filter.
1 big 1 small container from walmart.

 

Rotella T6 is great oil, but Shell no longer recommends it for on road gasoline engines with a catalytic converter.

 

From Shell's website. "The oil carries both the American Petroleum Institute (API) diesel "C" rating as well as the API gasoline engine "S" rating. Ratings differ based on the oil. Rotella oils like T3 15w-40 meets both the API CJ-4 and SM specifications, and may be used in both gasoline and diesel engines. However, it is formulated specifically for vehicles without catalytic converters, containing phosphorus levels beyond the 600-800ppm range. Therefore, Rotella is not recommended for gasoline vehicles with catalytic converters due to the higher risk of damaging these emission controls."

 

My cats have 200k miles and were in perfectly functional shape even after using rotella for 80k of that.

 

I read on Toyota's website that if you're towing or hauling, a heavier (I think that's the current term) weight oil like 5w40 vs 5w30 could be beneficial. I haven't seen any threads about it though.

 

Key words,..."could be" as Long as no shock loading is involved, as in off-road .
Xw-30 should be fine.

I expect the thicker oil might generate more heat,leading to even thinner properties during operation
