Overhead Compass/Temp Fix

I'm finding Step 3 impossible to complete. Did anyone snap pics of this step?

I did the solder fix on mine a few months ago. Worked fine for a few months and then went out. Last night I re-soldered and had it working. This morning about 5 minutes into my drive to work, the thing quit working again. What could possibly happen in that 5 minutes to break it again?

So frustrating!!

 

You could always go to the dealership and have them fix it. Enjoy the cost of that.

 

your solder work sucks. trust me, my solder work sucks. i tried to fix it, and it worked for about a week. it quit again. i then took it to a buddy that builds prototype circuit boards for a living. he used a much better solder tool, much better solder, much better solder cleaner (i didnt clean a thing)..and watched his work thru a big ass microscope. i watched him do it, and there was much less cussing and mumbling.

been working fine for 3 years. he actually beefed up the other joints as well. he said it if goes out, he will make me a new one from scratch. hah.

find someone that solders better.

 

I've never met someone who was good at soldering either. I hope I never have to fix my overhead console. Wait! I don't own a 2011 Tacoma anymore.

^ that is pretty cheap. i think my friend said he should start doing it for us..but i seem to remember a much bigger number. dunno.

if you want, i can call him. he is in the bay area with me.

 

Electric tape, fixed! It took me about 20 minutes to take apart, put tape over the loose 510 piece & it worked. If it goes out again I will re-tape it. Simple

 

It will happen again. Next time take the circuit board into any TV type shop. They might charge you $5 to solder them back. If you smell burning plastic it is the tape on the resistors. They get hot enough to un-solder themselves, imagine the heat on that tape!

Also, consider using silver solder. It's rated for a much higher temp. I've got a black taco so I figure it was the heat that was bothering it. I used silver solder where ever I could and it held up this summer. You can get it at radio shack, it's a bit pricy but worth it over the 60/40

 

Where did you find it online? I tried the fix but it didn't work.. Drives me nuts..

 

Did you run solder along both sides of both 510 resistors? Even if it doesn't look cracked it most likely is, under a magnifying glass. If you did not run solder along both sides of both of them, pull it and try again.

 

All,

-I don't recommend the use of silver solder as suggested above; it requires more heat to melt, therefore stressing the components more, and creating brittle joints. Silver solder is for jewelry and certain types of electronics, not for general use.

-don't create a solder bridge between the resistor(s) and the solder pad that is in close proximity! This creates a display-ruining short when powered on.

-don't use electrical tape to hold the resistors to the board. It won't hurt anything, but it sure won't last long. Just do it right and solder new components in correctly.

Quality control dropped the ball on this one. However, I had 45 minutes into my fix including modifying my soldering gun. Many thanks to OP!!!!!!! P.S. both 510's were loose, I soldered both as recommended.

 

Can anyone shed some light on those metal clips that secure the front end of the console? When I pulled it down 1 of the metal clips flew onto my lap and I can't find any other ones.. I honestly have no idea where the clip goes and what it attaches to.. anyone have a pic of what its supposed to look like?

Get a magnet and probe up behind the stamped support. Both of mine were hiding up there...
