I'll never understand why people put aftermarket plugs in their cars. I've seen pay over $150.00 for us to put factory plugs back in their car, for the exact same problem that's listed above.

Thanks! I'll stop beating my head and continue my fight when I can get the plugs.

Thanks! Will stop beating my head against it and take up the fight when the plugs come in.

I try to explain to people all the time to use OEM plugs. I feel they fall victim to advertising. A plug "Upgrade" used to give good results back in the early days (60's 70'), but many times that was due to the OEM plugs being fouled, or what not. One plug that has piqued my interest, is the Puls Star plugs. I have heard reports that shows a significant gain, but I have also heard they cause a Lean Out condition, leading to poor running. At $25.00 or more per plug, Its gonna be a while before I can throw some in and run them on a dyno.

Always keep it simple, and save yourself a lot of money and headaches. We have a tech who always goes for the most complex solution every time he gets a car in, and he's wrong about 95% of the time.

Let me know how those work out. I'm not gonna mess with my engine, it's got 160K on it, and I'd really rather have a 4.0 Taco or even a new Tundra. If and when business picks up, I'll grab something newer, and turn my '01 in to a test mule for my buddy's bumper business.

No luck with the new OEM Denso plugs. No change in rough, surging idle, or complete lack of power. What would be the next most likely issue? Wires had correct resistance.

You have no power? Is your check engine light back on? I hate trying to diagnose over the computer, but I'll do what I can to help you out.

Truck sounds like a 4cyl, loud with probably only a third of the engines power. When you stop the truck idle rough then settles onto a sort of surge. Going to take if over and clear the codes after work. The check engine light came on but only after I accidentally tried to start with a coil unplugged. The engine just turned over once be died with the coil unplugged. Plugged in and back to above. Thanks for the help. I will try the stupid easy stuff and take it to the dealership when I have money next week if I can't get a fix.

Cleared the codes and they were just the engine misfire codes 300, 302, 305, 306, ext., and 1300. Started the truck back up and it ran the same but did not throw any codes and the check engine light did not come on. Seems starved for fuel or almost like half engine not running. When I get to a constant speed the truck seem fine until I stop or try to give it gas. Letting foot off break from a stop the truck keeps lurching forward instead of smoothly rolling at idle. Call if you want. Aaron 386-689-7119

It sounds like the air flow meter, but I'm suspicious as to why it's not throwing a code. Can you visually inspect the AF meter, and see that there's nothing stuck to it, like a leaf, or something small like that?

Maybe try cleaning the small metal wire in the AF meter with some contact cleaner, and see if that clears it up?

I've got a cat on my '01 that throws a code every two weeks. Usually when a cat starts to get plugged, the only tell-tale sign will be reduced performance. I've seen people drive with 'em plugged until the car literally can not move under it's own power. It'll idle, and start fine, but try to move, and it's game over.

yeah....i was just kinda rough-basing it off the old ranger i had........cat got clogged, and ran decently up to 50 mph, then it just lost all its power, but it never threw a cel.

Will check the MAF. Did not see anything with a quick look after removing air intake to access the coil packs to change plugs. I thought the cats for a second but the truck ran perfect then did this the next time it was started. First problem I have ever had with the truck No degraded power over time. The rough idle throws me for a cat, should have enough flow to at least idle. How many fuel filters/pumps and where are they located in the Tacoma. Got to get a service manual!

Fuel pumps rarely go out on Toyota's and the filter really wouldn't make it miss. Take the 2 phillips head screws out of the case, and inspect the AF meter that way. That'll give you a way to clean it off, too.
