We bought it in early spring and it's the perfect size for me, my wife and son...queen bed in front, double in the back and the dinette converts into a twin. It's the smallest unit we could find with the toilet/shower combo...I thought it was overkill but I'm glad my wife talked me into it.

The Tacoma pulls it great but you definitely know it's back there. The dry weight is ~2,000 lbs but we're closer to 2,500 lbs when it's loaded with all of our gear. We camp around the Pocono Mtns quite a bit and I don't think I would want to pull anything heavier up there. I know the Taco would do it but I don't want a camper that will restrict us in any way. We want to be able to go anywhere we want and not have to worry about the camper bogging us down, and this one doesn't. I highly recommend this setup.

 

We have a '99 Rockwood Freedom pop up that is just about that same size and weight. Like you, it's just me, my wife, and our daughter - and it's the perfect size for us. I've given a TON if thought to getting a larger hard-side camper, but I really don't want to be worried about the truck's capability. As you point out, even with a 4.0L double cab, I can definitely tell its back there. A few times, I'll have to get down to 3rd gear on long hills. I can't IMAGINE towing a 4K pound camper around here (upstate SC, northern GA, and western NC).
Instead, I think we'll just stick with the pop up and not give any thought to where we can or can't take it. Here's a pic from this weekend in Hiawassee, GA.

I currently tow a 14ft Carson Rebel toy hauler with my 06 Tacoma..Trailer weighs 3400 lbs empty and I add about 600-700 lbs to that..Have a weight distributing hitch and no worries...

 

Also pull it on the sand at Pismo 4 or 5 times a year with a 2 wheel drive...Just air down all the tires and you are good to go......

 

How do you like your rebel? I just bought a Carson Outlaw 17 foot. Only used it once. So far so good except a few minor problems, but bought it used so that's expected.

 

Thanks! It's a 2000 Jayco 12FSO. It's got pretty much everything but A/C...12' box, king and queen beds, fridge, hot water heater, furnace, toilet/shower, dining slide-out, and front storage. We have a 2 and a 4 year old, so we appreciate the room and the cassette toilet.

Last time I had it on the CAT scales, it was about 3300# fully loaded.

 

We have A/C, but no toilet or front storage. Those would be really nice.

I'm glad to hear an accurate weight of one loaded. I would guess that ours is in the 2500lb range, loaded.

 

2012 18'BH Koala by Skyline. 3750 lbs dry. Estimate 4400 lbs with propane, battery, gear etc. I use weight distribution hitch, anti-sway bar, impulse brake controller, pro-EFX towing mirrors, and Firestone ride-rite airbags.

 

We tow this with our DCab LB with towing package. Camper has 3 Queen Beds and a slide. Camper is 4400 lbs dry and we tow with all tanks empty. The MPG average around 15/16. Can't wait to take it to State College for a little football this fall!

 

Nice rig! You are getting much better fuel mileage than I am. You must be a little lighter on the pedal. I get about 12 towing.

 

I am in the lovely state of Delaware, and it is really flat! Want to take the trip up to the PA Mountains here this fall, so we shall see what the mpg's will be.

I use a WDH and the taco does excellent pulling it.

I only have around 50 miles on it with the tractor to tow the tractor into the service shop. I anticipate only towing the tractor a couple times a year for work/friends/service.

Most of the time, I expect I'll use the trailer for much lighter loads.

 

I don't understand why hipsters will pay so much for so little.

Loving the Rebel behind the Tacoma....I use the toyhauler a lot between Pismo, dirt riding and track days...So glad I finally bought one....Carson makes a pretty decent trailer IMO....
