    Hello all,

I just traded my '05 GMC Canyon access cab with a vinyl rollup tonneau cover for a '13 double cab, long box, sr5 Tacoma. The dealer put on a Truxedo LowPro QT rollup tonneau cover on it and I'm not impressed. I had told the car salesman that I was interested in getting a lock for the tailgate but this tonneau cover makes that worthless since I can just reach under the rubber lip of the cover to pop the release. Plus the seal of that rubber lip is terrible and I need to close the tailgate before I close the cover or the lip gets mashed up and lets in even more rain.

I'm looking for a tonneau cover that folds out of the way when I've got the bed full and that is fairly weather tight and is reasonably secure. The vinyl cover on my last truck met those requirements. It rolled right up, when it was down, I could open and close the tailgate but it would take something like a slimjim to open the cover it if the tailgate was locked. In the 5 years I owned that truck, I never once took the cover off. Anybody know of a cover that fits that bill? The lower height of the tailgate on the Tacoma presents a bit of a problem. The Truxedo would probably be fine if it wasn't for that.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

same cover, I close tail gate last. sounds like you need a hard cover like fibermax. you should be able to sell that cover easy.

I've had my extang trifecta for a couple of weeks now, can't complain. It does fold, but it is not a hard cover though. Extangfactoryoutlet.com $305 shipped.

I don't like the idea of a hard tonneau cover, I like the ability to just roll up the tonneau cover. A 3 part cover might work if all 3 sections fold up. On my last truck I had the rollup vinyl velcro kind and liked it. Plus I never had to take it off like I'd have to with a hard cover.

    So, anybody have any suggestions?

I've got the lowproQT on my '13 DCSB and had it on my F150 with none of the issues you are having. It works as designed, is water tight and I can roll it up out of the way on the spot. Sounds like yours was not installed correctly.

    Best

The Undercover Flex looks like a contendor. Does it fit properly at the tailgate so that you can't just slide your finger under to pop the cover open? That's one of my complaints with the Truxedo LoPro. It's more than I want to pay, but there's no point in paying less if it doesn't do what I want.

    MattinMA,

Could you post a photo of the end of your cover at the tailgate? Maybe I can take it to the dealer and show them that they did something wrong. Tonight, I can post a couple of pictures to show people what I'm griping about.

    Thanks,
    mikeg

I have the Tonno pro tri fold. I don’t need the full bed that often and for the difference in cost it wasn’t worth the extra bucks.

But for one that folds all the way up in a hard cover this might be an option for you.

I also like the added security of a hard cover, especially on vacations, sightseeing, holiday shopping etc., and with the Pop & Lock it works well for me. I also like the way it looks with the vinyl covering as you don't see the folds and it looks like a one piece cover.

I have the Truxedo LoPro QT on mine and love it. You have to drop my tailgate to unlatch it and roll it up. Completely watertight, easy and fast to use, looks great.

If security is your number one thing though, a hard cover would be your best bet. If people want to steal your stuff, they will find a way...but a hard cover is much more difficult to cut through than a soft one.

Not only that, if you don't have a tailgate lock and depending on where you park it, the hard cover acts as another deterrent for tailgate thieves.

I have had soft covers in the past on my other trucks, but maybe I'm getting a little more cynical as I get older. With mall thefts, tailgate thefts etc., I try to make it a little harder for someone looking for an easy target.

OP, the security thing is what is going to hang you up. The reality is that any soft cover is a pocket knife away from being opened. It you truely want bed security, you need a hard cover, otherwise your bed security is, out-of-sight-out-of-mind.

BTW, I have a soft cover and know that it isn't secure, but it takes someone who is purposfully looking to get in.

    Lurkin,

I've always said the same thing about the security of a soft tonneau cover but so far it has worked. I do like being able to lock the tailgate and requiring somebody to have that coat hanger or pocket knife though. Not knowing if there's something worth swiping seems to be enough to discourage people. Plus if somebody goes at it with either one, it's going to be a bit more conspicuous.

I'm surprised nobody has brought up Access covers yet. I have this one:
    http://www.agricover.com/access/literider/

It has latches on both sides and to release you need to undo each side separately. Not going to stop a determined thief but will definitely deter somebody thinking about opening your tailgate. I've had 2 literiders, one on my 01 that I installed and my current one that came with the truck when I bought it.

My 01 self installed one never leaked a drop, my current one leaked along the cab edge when I first got it. I have since fixed it but it will still let a few drops in along that edge. I love it.

    Kingston73,

That looks like the model I had on my Canyon. I did like it, I'm not sure how they handle the lower tailgate though. Is the tailgate on your truck lower than the sides? It looks like the Truxedo would have been ok on mine if not for that fact. The rubber 'lip' they put on to make up the difference was pitiful.

I have the Bak Roll-X on mine and I'm happy with it. It's an aluminum cover that rolls up like a soft cover. It has locking rails on both sides so it's fairly secure, but like any cover, if someone wants to break into it they could.
