Matte black is tricky. IMO the only time it actually looks good is when it's a high end professional paint job, and even then there's something about it that just says, I'm a cheap-a** and sprayed my car with primer.

Case in point. Clearly this paint was done well, but to me it just looks unfinished and dirty.

Matte finishes can look better if they are not black I think. Take this Bentley. IMO if this was matte black it would look very cheap. Remove the graphics from the side and the matte finish actually looks pretty killer with the smoke gray. To me what makes it work is that the body lines are still visible and light can still show the lines and shape of the car. Matte black just hides all the lines and makes it look like a cheap ambiguous blob.

I know you didn't mean anything bad. The term "expo" is a misnomer and grossly overused these days, and used in the wrong way. 99.9% of the people out there that claim to have "expedition" rigs are nothing more than car campers, myself included.

When I take this truck around the world, then I'll consider it an "expedition" rig.

I just have a modestly built trail rig that happens to have a snorkel and a tent on it. Doesn't make it "expedition" worthy.

I think you could benefit by using plasti dip for some test runs to find the color you like. I know it comes out matte but you could get a general idea of what it would look like before you made it permanent. Just an idea

Too much effort/cost to mess with plastidip for something temporary like that. That's what photoshop is for. :)

I agree with this completely. I've often wondered how a car with a semi-gloss black would look (not completely glossy and not just straight matte). I see a bunch of cars around here that are completely matte black, and even when it's done well with real paint, I automatically think cheap, plasti-dipped... I use to think I wanted my truck completely matte black but now not so much.
