any disadvantages to leveling kit?

hey guys i was thinking about doing the ready lift 2" leveling kit on my taco as my next mod cuz i really like how they look after that, but by doing this would it decrease my mpg or make my ride bumpier? I know it says that it will keep your "factory ride" but i want to hear it from some of you guys that have had it done...

 

Everything stays the same as stock, except the front of the truck sits a little higher. Plus, as an added bonus, you can run a bigger tire.

 

what size tire? do you have to get an alignment too?

 

Oh yeah, an alignment is needed. Almost forgot about that. Try and find a guy who knows what he's doing, otherwise your truck will wander all over the place, and possibly pull to one side.

My truck is aligned to stock specs, and it rides nice, doesn't pull, and doesn't wander.

I have 265-75-16 (32") tires on mine, with a 3" leveling kit on the front, and an add a leaf in the rear. I wish I would have went with 33 inch tires though. I have the clearance, since I run a tube bumper on the front.

 

idt i need an alingment and i just have the 265/70/R16 tires on and wasn't planning on getting new ones till these ones wore out since i just got them 6 weeks ago. I just want it for looks cuz i like how it is when everything is straight....don't do too much offroading haha

 

If you put in a leveling kit, you'll need an alignment. You'll trash those new tires in no time, if you don't get it aligned.

 

I wonder how long it will be before my upper ball joints pop out? I've got 160K on 'em, and they're the original ones. That snap-ring can only take so much!

If we had work, I'd get those sweet Camburg A-arms and stop worrying about it.

 

ok i didn't understand completely that i had to get an alignment after installation, but the guy i would go to does alignments too so that will help and i guess i'd have to get my headlights adjusted as well

 

Is his truck Red, by any chance? We had a Tacoma towed in that had the upper ball joint ripped out of the control arm. No bueno. Looked like a high pucker situation, as the truck surely went completely out of control.

 

You're basically extending the suspension downwards, which is not where the factory designed the truck to ride. So, you just have to put it back where it belongs. No biggie really, especially if you have a buddy that can do alignments.

 

If you are proficient with a Phillips head screw driver, I would save your self a couple bucks and align them your self. Super easy and it takes all of about 5-10 minutes.

If you use the search feature, you can find a thread about how to align your head lights. I threw up a .pdf from the FSM a few months ago.

 

When I first read your post, I thought you were talking about the suspension. I've seen some crazy stuff at the shop, but never an alignment with a phillips head!

As for head lights, you're right. There's really nothing to it, just adjust down to where you want 'em. If you don't touch the left-right screws, you really couldn't mess it up.

 

I would have pulled that spacer out of both sides, and got that warrantied! That must have been a long ride home!

 

Not in my book. I see people get ripped off each and every day. Not only in the shop, but in sales, too. I feel not one bit of symapthy for dealerships. They will rip you off, lie to you, steal from you, and not even bat an eye.

The number of honest techs is dwindling daily. Every time we take a pay cut to further improve the profitability of the store, we lose another guy to the dark side. It's sad, but it's true. I have about twenty years experience in my field, and every day I try to find a way out of it. I'm too honest, and I can't sleep at night knowing I ripped somebody off. In other words, I don't fit in anymore.
