Great job on that bench. It looks great. Looks like a dining room table instead of a work bench!

My guess is 125 lbs, maybe a little more, its pretty heavy. 97.5" long and 28.5" wide. It made a awesome beer pong table last weekend, still gatta do the casters on the legs. And like you guys said now that its done i don't want to abuse it to much lol, so it might be a light duty work bench. Or ill just throw a piece of plywood on top when i work on my grill projects and stuff

There is an Android app for Houzz. It's nice to just browse through for ideas. They may have one for iphone as well.
There is a lot of over-priced stuff on there as well.

Any of you guys professional wood identifiers? These hardwood floors were under the carpet of the house we bought. When we widened a door way, there is now a space/gap on the floor where the sill board (2X4) went for the old doorway opening.

(i.e. when we opened the doorway up 32", there is now a 32" long channel in the floor between the living room and kitchen; see pic for area on floor - still blocked by old kick board

I am looking for the best way to fill this gap and a raised threshold is either not available in the right width, or looks stupid. I want to try and identify the old flooring material in hopes of finding some to cut and just place into the new channel. While it will be noticable because of the aging the current floor has, I think it will be my best bet to try and do it right.

It almost looks like old Maple. The growth rings are not as prominant as they would be with oak, and there aren't any major knots to indicate pine.

^need a close up of the grain zach, i would say most likely oak, maybe white oak from your description. You can always custom make a threshold or have one made.

Here is a closeup of the threshold gap and a better image of the wood grain (now that I have been researching and looking at it, it may be oak).

Does anyone have a good idea on how to deal with this gap? I am thinking that I would like to remove the threshold between the hallway and kitchen floor as well and do the same to both gaps.

Also, is it possible that this hardwood floor may run under the linoleum in the kitchen? It doesn't seem to be the case because the exposed subflooring ends do not appear to have any wood plank gaps; it seems to just be plywood.

I am planning on pulling a little bit of the linoleum up to see what lies beneath - who knows, this whole house has been a bag of mysteries to date.

In my unprofessional opinion, looking at how the grain reflects the light from the camera flash down at the bottom, I'd also say it's oak. Still a little hard to tell though.

I made some faux wood beams out of the wood we took off the walls and mounted it to the ceiling. I just created a u-channel, attached some wood anchors to the ceiling and attached the beams to the anchors. I also attached our old dining room light over the island cart.
    1185077_4649946106716_1159904492_n.jpg

Started on the last cabinet. The old one was recessed and had the same tile the kitchen did. It had a backsplash and small counter top.

I built a new cabinet box and fit it into the spot. Once I face frame it, I'll attach a tambour style sliding door (aka roll top desk style). The microwave will go in there and can be hidden by closing the tambor door. I originallly planned to have another shelf in there but it would have been too narrow and too deep to use the back effectively.

I agree, it looks like oak to me as well. What is the thickness of the hardwood, 3/8" or thicker ? Lumber yards still sell the oak flooring that is 5/16 x 2.5" . You could tear up the existing strips of hardwood back to the seem Of the next existing hardwood ( Just the width threshold was) and replace with new to the vinyl floor, have the entire floor sanded then refinished. It will all look like a new floor when complete.

^ he could go with that option but its a pain in the ass piecing in T&G flooring and even a bigger PITA to have wood floors refinished while your living in the house. its probably 3/4 x 2 1/4. What i would do is make a few cuts, tear out some pieces so that area is squared off, then i would rip out all the linoleum and lay down some tile, probably continue it into the kithen or wherever that door leads.

That is actually a great idea; I would ideally like to piece in replacement boards to the seams as SH7mi suggested, but the thought of having to refinish the whole floor is a little daunting right now. The hallway to the right of the picture continues into two bedrooms which all have the same old flooring - in order to "do it right", I would have to refinish the entire first floor. Not a fan of having the living room nice and brand new looking while the hallway and bedrooms are old and beat up.

I think I will try and fill the gap with a piece of lumber cut and planed to fit flush, and when I finish the upstairs bathroom, work on tiling the whole kitchen floor. For now, a flush threshold piece should keep toe stubbing to a minimum.

    Curved wall with stacked windows

I needed to get a fair curve on the window liners

Installed the liners full depth , held in place temporarily with plywood blocks

Rigged up a full size trammel and scribed the radius on the inside of the liners

After scribing the curve on the bottoms I used them as a template to cut the rest of the tops / bottoms for each set with a pattern cutting router bit

Liners installed I set about bending and laminating the trims

This is a test run for the applied stool

Actual glue up of the stool using a plywood clamp system

Out of the clamps the next day for a bit of sanding and dimensioning

    Close up of the re-assembled pieces , 4 @ 3/8" x 1 1/16"

    Too be continued
