Funny story I came across today. Thought some would get a chuckle out of it. Some of you (older fans) may remember some of the mentioned players and of course the late Lewis Grizzard.

Greatest Headline in the History of Sports Journalism

    You may not believe this…
But Happy Dicks was a linebacker at the University of Georgia in the mid 60’s, which should make this article about the young journalist from Georgia, the late Lewis Grizzard, even funnier.

    It was Friday Night….
On the eve of the Georgia – South Carolina game 41 years ago, three Sigma Pi fraternity brothers were drinking a few ice cold Pabst Blue Ribbon Beers at the old Callaway Gardens Apartments on the Atlanta Highway…
In case you were wondering and for the guys that are still out there..
They were “The Hound”, “Tex” and “Bake”….

They were discussing the upcoming game against the Gamecocks and lamenting the fact that Georgia was going into the game with several key players out with injuries, including the Dogs starting defensive end Billy Payne and his roommate, Middle Linebacker Happy Dicks.

Around ten o’clock that night, another fraternity brother, Lewis Grizzard, came to the party after he got off work. Their buddy Lewis was inactive at the time because he had gotten married over the summer to his high school sweetheart, Nancy. In addition to taking a full load at the University of Georgia, he was working two jobs to help pay for (as he called it) this expensive habit.

A talented young man, he was writing two columns daily – one in the morning for the Athens Banner Herald and one in the afternoon for the Athens Daily News.
Lewis walked in, went straight to the refrigerator, got a beer, plopped down in a chair, pushed his glasses back up his nose and announced…

“Gentlemen, with any luck at all tomorrow morning you’ll witness journalistic history. I have submitted my column and if it gets by my editor – and there’s a good chance of that happening, since he looked drunk earlier this evening – you’ll enjoy the greatest headline in the history of sports journalism”.

He refused to tell them what it was he had written, and to be honest with you…
They all forgot about it by the time the evening wrapped up.
As Lewis went back to his lovely, young bride, the three fraternity brothers went back to the Fraternity house to get a head start on the football weekend.

The next morning, as usual, they all went straight for the Sports Section.
As they pulled the sports section out of the paper, all they could do was smile, because their buddy had pulled it off.

To this day, Vince Dooley calls it his most memorable column ever…
All because of the headline which read:

DOGS TO PLAY COCKS WITH DICKS OUT

There’s no doubt about it, it was the greatest headline in the history of sports journalism.

    We still miss you Lewis…

Do all Gamecock fans feel the need to live up to the name Cocks? Because most every SC fan I've run across are some of the cockiest fans I've met. Aside from Warputer anyway. And this coming from a team that continually lays an egg somewhere through the season just like we do.

Now don't go all off half "cocked", because I'm not saying we're going to win, it's too early in the year with such a young D to really know what to expect. I think it should be a very entertaining game.

I'm very proud of how the program has come alone. My time there 97-01, we were the SEC whipping boys. I only looked forward to the Clemson game. I wasn't rewarded till after I graduated in 2001 when SC ended its losing streak. I for one do not take our recent success for granted. Fortunes fade, I will enjoy it while it lasts.

Who is expected to take over when Murray goes pro? Does UGA have a good backup?

Good mindset! You're now on the good fan list in my book

With that being said, 97-01 you were everyone's whipping boy, including Clemson...that was one of our 4-0 streaks

We have Mason that has been patiently waiting behind Murray. He has played a little in some games 2 years ago and looked really impressive. He agreed to redshirt last year after wanting to transfer. I'm sure he did that figuring Murray would go pro after last season.

Aside from him we have a freshman this year by the name Brice Ramsey that is a highly recruited QB. I saw him on a show on ESPN about recruiting. Can't remember how high he was ranked but is highly touted. So I'm not sure which of these 2 would get the position. If I know Richt he would give it to Mason just because of him waiting. But I have no idea which of the 2 is better at this point.

Don't forget that we have Parker coming in next year. He is supposed to be even more polished and dangerous than Ramsey. Looks like Ramsey is gonna have a fight on his hands...

We will gladly give LeMay to PreRunner...he never will see playing time.

I haven't really heard much about Parker, I didn't realize he was that high on the list. I knew LeMay didn't have a chance though. And he was talked so highly of when he signed. Speaking of LeMay, didn't we get his little brother also? WR I believe?

Arkansas has one of the toughest schedules in the country this year. A&M, at Florida, South Carolina, at Alabama. Plus Miss St, Ole Miss and LSWho.

    Wish us luck!

Yeah, we got little LeMay. One of LeMay's issues I am hearing is that not only does his playing lack a bit, but he can't grasp the playbook, either. Apparently, not the sharpest tool in the shed..

Oh, and that QB I mentioned is Jacob Park, not Parker.

Never mind, you can keep him. We're bringing in two dual threat guys this year who should be able to play Mullen's system. Those two, in addition to Dak Prescott, who will start this weekend, and Damien Williams, we should be pretty good at qb depth, for the first time in Mullen' s career.

Two very valid points, my life doesn't revolve around a message board, hence I mostly just look over what folks are talking about from time to time and throw in my two cents occasionally. Sorry boys no salt life or yeti stickers here.... More of a freshwater/ Coleman man anyway. Additionally, my post from 2011 was made just after Spurrier made a dumb play to line up a field goal with no timeouts left and a disputable call was made by the refs that no time was left (despite 2 seconds being on the clock) and I was a bit rev'd up. Spurrier's clock management has always been terrible and that time it costs us the game. Yes, I've eased off the throttle on what I said... So there you go. I'm just tired of hearing Gamecock fans saying "the stars are going to realign and we'll suck again" I hear enough of that from every other fanbase and just didn't want to hear it from another gamecock.

Come on buddy, never meant to come off as an asshole just trying pump up a gamecock fan that poor mouths their own team. No team deserves that...ok Vanderbilt deserves that but that's it. And I fully agree that we haven't had the best of luck in the SEC. 1 division title and 0 conference titles.... Not exactly to impressive ill admit I just happen to think that finally our time has come to actually win the SEC in the next few years.... That's no cocky because I've had 25 years of humbleness.
