AC Blows Hot When on Cold Setting and Cold When On Hot Setting

Hey everyone, have a bit of a predicament haha. So I have a 2008 access cab and I went to put a 2012 climate control panel in it. I had the black A33 harness already in the 2012 panel with wires attached, so all I did was cut off my old harness and solder the wires onto the new one. Everything works great, but, the AC is reversed. It blows hot when the dial is on cold and vice versa.

According to the wiring diagram, the grey wire (AC) should be in socket 16 on the new harness. However, on the 2012 harness that I have in my hands, it is in socket 13. Would moving the grey wire into socket 16 make this work? I'm really not quite sure if this would fix it, but like I said everything else works perfectly. Also, where in the world would I get a pin connector to place in the harness? Tried looking online but no dice. Is there an easy fix for doing this?

If anyone has some tips for taking out individual pins (they're super tiny) that would be wonderful.

I don't understand exactly why moving the AC wire (grey wire) from pin 13 to 16 on the 2012 harness may fix this, but I'm thinking it's my best shot at this point. Anyone have any opinions?

 

Just an update, I moved the grey AC wire to pin 16 and that didn't fix it. Perhaps I have two wires crossed? I'm sure they're all matched up, but does anyone have an idea of what two wires would cause the AC to be reversed? I'm not entirely sure what all the acronyms means on the diagram.

That's strange. Assuming that you followed the instruction exactly you shouldn't have any problem unless there is a difference in a 2008 diagram. I didn't give a hard look at the diagram in the picture on the write up but I don't know why it wouldn't work. Some one on here with much more knowledge about this kind of thing will surely jump in and help though.

I like the idea though (not of the reversed heat/air) but the black face of the control.

 

Get a reverse sticker made. IE red is blue and blue is red.

 

I could probably take a picture of the splicing that I did, but suffice to say, absolutely everything on the AC works aside from the direction of the dial that makes the air blow hot or cold. The thread that I linked to, the OP used another harness that plugged into the one inside the truck, then used that as an adapter to plug it into the 2012 one.

The only noticeable difference between his wiring and the climate controls I have is that the grey AC wire is in Pin 13 on mine and Pin 16 is his. The AC button doesn't function when I move the AC wire.

No idea how to fix haha. A mechanic buddy of my told me I could should be able to follow the wires to where they're plugged in the dash and switch around the two power wires there (it should have a triplet - two power wires and a ground) and that should fix it, but I can't find the harness in the dash and taking it all apart seems difficult.

Hoping someone who has more experience can help. I appreciate the replies though!

I appreciate it! It looks great sitting in the truck, just need this one minor point to work out. I've been asking around trying to see if anyone has any ideas to fix it.

Trust me, the difference in night and day between the 2008 dials and the new panels. It's ridiculous. Huge upgrade in the cabin with such a simple measure. Only trick is finding a set of climate controls, though I got lucky finding that and a clock fairly quickly by asking on the buy/sell/trade board.

 

The temperature dial on the 2012 dials when all the way to Cold is sending a 0 volt supply to the truck, when all the way to Hot it is sending a 13.5 volt supply to the truck. 2005 to 2008 trucks are looking for the exact opposite, Cold is 13.5V and Hot is 0 V.

It looks like since the ground is shared between the temperature dial and the selector switch pin 9 on the 2008 and pin 1 on the 2012, you can't just switch around the + and - wires to the temperature dial in the climate control and it work.
If you did that it looks like you would switch the selector dial around to work backwards.

The 2005 to 2008 wiring is different by this than the 2009 to 2011. I am guessing that the 2012 climate control is the same wiring as the 2009 to 2011's
I tried a 2009 ac dial in my 2006 truck and the same thing that you are getting happened to me.

If you could isolate the power supply to or from the temperature dial then you could switch the voltage around and it work right. This is my best guess going off the wiring diagram.

 

Thanks for all the great information. To isolate the power supply, would I just follow the wire labeled AC back into the dash and see where it leads? I imagine it would be like my mechanic friend said and would split into a couple wires on the dash side. Does anyone know where in the dash this cluster of wires originates from?

 

I am not really sure if following the wires will work and which wire you are looking to find. To me it looks like the potentiometer for the dial is set up reverse in the 05 to 08 trucks than in the 2009 to 2011 trucks.

Here is the voltage specs and the air conditioning wiring diagram from the 06 Factory service manual. I am pretty sure the 09 and up are different on the wiring. Either way something is different.

I would test all the voltages coming out of the wires when the dial is turned each direction and see if that can help you find the one that you need.

 

Ok, so for example, with the climate control on the coldest setting, test the wires to see which would have 0 volts, and for the hottest setting which has 13.5 volts. Assuming everything works out and only two of the ten wires has a voltage of 0 and 13.5, I can just switch them and it should be reversed? Does that make sense? My electrical knowledge beyond theoretical is not very good.

 

Jones has it right...thisnhappesns as well if you add any 09-11 controls to a pre 09
