Which camp knife to buy?

I've been using an Ontario USMC bayonet that a friend gave me years ago. I camp maybe twice a month during the winter and the thing has never let me down.

 

The ESEE 5 will be delayed a little, since the order was canceled I haven't reordered it yet, but I will and will let you guys know how it turns out.

 

what are you guys calling a camp knife? just something laying around to spread nutella on your fire pit toasted bagel..cutting cheese and salami off of a log?

i use a $5, antique forgecraft butcher knife. i've flipped pancakes with thing..and dug out hunks of meat from vats of fry oil. i cut an elk up with that thing on a plastic covered picnic table. glad there wasnt any kids around.

Camp/international war on terror knife.

 

Something to baton wood, start a fire with, light chopping, like a small conifer branch to make bedding to sleep on and maybe clean larger game. I don't know what your talking about all this nutella, bagels, pancakes, fry oil and picnic tables...?

 

Done all that. My camps run the full spectrum of comforts.

 

While it's nice to have a knife that's able to do all those things, a hatchet may be better suited to your needs?

A good knife will do all of the above, but in a survival situation you have to weigh energy expended on tasks vs energy expended carrying tools.
In most survival situations, you are better off remaining with your vehicle, so all three can be used to advantage.

 

Get a gransfor bruks axe. Amazingly sharp. Here is my small forest axe. I've used it mostly to kill chickens so far. And kindling for a truck camp fire. It stays sharp a long time.

 

I've been eyeballing one of those for about a year so far. I just haven't found a need for an axe where I have been camping lately so I have held off on it. One of those this new knife I will be getting soon and a leathermen is all I would need.

Why such a large knife for a camp knife ? your choices are all huge.
perfect camp knife size is Esee 4.

esee 6, junglas etc are huge. 4" to 5.5" is a perfect camp knife. 1095 steel for ease of re sharpening on the fly, rockwell hardness of 57 to 60 makes for a perfect blade

My camping knife is a rat 5, have used it for everything for well over 6 years, held up just fine, i feel it is tad big, that is why i suggest the esee 4, perfect overall size, good for detail and camp cooking duty, yet ca process wood if need be and act as a general good cutting tool.

 

I've been wanting to get one of these. Everyone should own at least one bayonet.

I just got one of these. So far I like it.

My Ka-Bar that I got at the PX at Camp Pendleton in 1992 has never let me down.

 

I had used a USAF survival bolt knife for a while and always thought it could be just a smidge longer. I had decided to go with the ESEE 5 but the order was canceled because of some credit card fraud on my account so I just have to reorder it.

 

the 5 is a tank of a knife. I want one just out of novelty, but it is not a good slicing blade due to being so thick. but you could pry yourself out of a vault with it.

No that's not a thick knife... This is a thick knife, I've got one of these TOPS lil roughneck and this is a thick knife hahaha harder then hell to sharpen and not very useful at cutting much but at almost half an inch thick and under 3 inch blade length it will kill someone if it just drops on their foot.
