    Capping the frame ends. Pretty stright forward. Weld on extra frame, hammer a bit. grind to shape of frame and clean up. gonna spray it and it it will be all finished

    Yeah, those welds just look like really bad tack welds from that angle... It cleaned up nice though:thumbsup: how is it that username put it... Something about bad welders being really good grinders:D

    It looks like it was pretty poppy and splattery. What was your wire speed and temp at? How did the welding sound when you were doing your beads? Consistent sound or crackly and popping? Might have something do do with the welder

    Booger welders are the best grinders. My Grandpa used to say "If it looks like chickenshit it will hold the same."

    Practice doing a single puddle on a nice, cleanly ground chunk of steel. Make sure the ground area is shiny too. Welding is an electrical process, and electrons don't flow through paint or rust very well. Once you can make a nice dime sized puddle, move over to the edge of that puddle and start a new one, creating a "stack of dimes". It should sound like sizzling bacon. I like bacon. Pretty soon you will be welding more and grinding less.

    I built my whole truck with a battery powered welder, and haven't had a single weld fail anywhere. They retail for $599, but I got a used one off ebay for about $250. A very capable welder for an affordable price. It can single pass 1/2" plate steel no problem, and with three deep cycle batteries can weld up to 3/4". I have also used it on sheetmetal. It will weld any metal they make wire for, and does great on aluminum. I use .035 flux core for most bumper/cage work. The cool thing is you will always be the hero on the trail. I once fixed a broken steering arm by welding a hi lift handle to it in bfe. Saved driving 50 miles out for parts.

    looks like your improving though. You should YouTube flux core welding. Should help a bit getting a technique down.

    it was poppy because at first i only pulled the trigger for a second or so to get a tack, but i realized that the metal was pretty good and was not going to blow through, so i could hold it down longer and give it a little movement and it would make a nice solid almost flat weld about 4 beads long. which was perfect for this application where it was getting ground down flat and smooth

    i want more welding and fab projects, they really are a lot of fun

    the ass end of my cx500c bobber.



    ill be welding back on the rear cross member turned fender mount here soon as well. that will be a much better opportunity to run full beads. however ill be a bit nervous about that one, because the last thing I want to do is be filling in holes in my boxed frame in a super cramped spot on the bike.
