    I personally don't view reducing the number of players on the ice surface as gimmick. I see it as opportunity. By creating time and space on the ice you increase the opportunity for players to skate faster, pass more frequently and ultimately attempt plays that they might not otherwise.

    The shootout is boring and removes too many of the games dynamics that simply reducing the number of skaters does not. There are over 1200 hockey games played in a single NHL season. I would relish to see a few minutes of 3 on 3 played to the level of which these guys are capable.

    A tie is fine too, it just doesn't give us much to see does it?
