 At 70mph you're only at 2.5k rpms
    I'm jealous: I'm damn near 3k rpms at 70mph with my 3.4 5 speed

My '94 with the 22re was the same. I installed an Audiovox cruise control and had to set it to 8-cyl because the CC would not run the engine at 3000, which was around 65.

I just completed my first road trip in my new truck. I set the cruise at 75 mph and did a 260 mile journey across Pennsylvania on the turnpike. It never missed a beat and did not break a sweat. RPMs were at aprox. 2700-2800.

The truck only had 1000 miles on it when I left and I got 22.1 mpg

I'm no fanboy like most of the guys on here. It's just a reliable brand.

Your gas mileage is likely to improve as the engine breaks in. :)

Every vehicle benefits from proper treatment.

For example, I drove my last Tacoma for 17 years and sold it in one day for $4,000 to the first person who came to look at it because it was in such excellent mechanical condition. Getting top dollar for my old Taco brought the price of my new Taco down to only $15,000. So it's in my own financial best interest to take proper care of vehicles. :)

Took my Taco in for the recalls that have piled up a couple days ago. And as I was leaving the service writer said to me, You take real good care of that truck, it shows. Made me proud.

Oh heck ya I maintain my vehicles but any vehicle will be reliable if you take care of it. I'm an ASE tech so I go above and beyond in maintenance. Any little squeak or noise that I hear its fixed next day. But as far as the brand I figured I'd give it a try. It's a great truck I've always liked the look but even the with the 4 and 6 cylinders toyota needs to up the power and throw in a small block or a diesel. I'm a full blown Ford guy. I work for them know a crap too much about them, but ill tell you the flat out truth why I have a tacoma. I wanted reliably. Yes I paid $16,700 for a 10 year old truck with 70k on it but shit I've had one major issue and that is it. Ford has some weak spots on their vehicles but the newer stuff is much better.

Before I bought my 2011 Tacoma, I owned a 1985 Corolla for 26 years. Admittedly, I spent those years taking public transportation into the city, so my mileage when I sold it was only 110,000. I would have kept it, but I worried about safety for my kids (seat belts, no air bags, etc).

I still got 32 mpg when I sold it.

    I got $1,500 for it.

That's how you get real value out of a car.

Last year, my wife sold her 19 year old Hyundai for $1,700 in only two days because it was in such good condition. And the recovered money from her old car lowered the cost of her new 2012 Toyota Yaris down to just $14,900. :)

    Sorry about that...

I've always wondered... is the final gearing on the 2.7 4X4's different from the 2.7 2X4's?

5-lug is definitely geared higher than the Prerunner and 4x4 to account for the tire size difference.
I believe the Prerunner and 4x4 are geared the same, but that is just speculation.
