Transporting Bicycles, What do you use?

Take the reflectors and pie plate off. It looks novice.

Get out to the trails, how many serious riders do you see with their bike strapped like that? None, because they have a holder of some sort because it's easier, and there's less risk of the bike coming loose.

With that strap setup if the wheels shifted the bike could fall over, granted the bed had grooves, but it could happen.

I also wouldn't want to have my shocks compressed like that just transporting the bike.

 

1. Shocks aren't compressed
2. Bike has never fallen over even high speeds on bumpy roads, extremely stable
3. Don't assume you know what kind of rider I am
3. I asked a question about the rocky mounts because I was curious not because I give a shit what you use.
4. Pie plate and reflectors? Do they affect your riding? I doubt it and I could give a shit if their still on. I suppose I could take them off so I "look like" a "real" rider. I like to look like I don't know what I'm doing that way when fools assume they end up looking like asshats

Bed bar with fork mounts:

I like using this setup because I can lock it. Its no fort knox, but its enough to keep the honest people honest when I'm in 7-11 buying chimichangas and 40's of PBR lol.

It takes 10 seconds to remove your front tire, lift the bike into the bed align the fork run your axle through the mount and tighten it down? Impressive. And to boot you have no bed storage left because you have to rig the front tyres somewhere.

(To each their own) but look at the benefits of a hitch mount:
rack the bike by the top tube
keep both tyres mounted
full access to the bed
no storage loss in bed
rack up to 4 bikes
lockable (frames only)
fully lockable (with a cable lock)

I like the rocky mounts cause I have a short bed. Even with the front tire off, my 29er barely fits. Plus its easier to load our 3 bikes in the bed without having to deal with all that strapping.

 

Carry your bike how you like. It isn't a dick measuring contest. Hell, I rode 20+ miles at Brunswick today and I drove there with my bike in my gf's Focus.

This! I prefer fork mount on bed bars so that i can haul 5 bikes with entire bed to store away gear including the front wheels. Use whatever works and is more convenient for you. This thread is suppose to provide different setups for viewers to read. Keep posting up your setups!

 

I has straps, I has luggage rack fork mount trays, I has bed rail mounts, I has rec hitch rack, I has a fork mount 2x4 for SUVs or bed floor, I has da cling-on trunk/hatch rack, I has a pad for da tailgate, I can hang them upside down from the Thule xsporter, I can drag them behind the truck, I can fit them inside the cab, I can just lay them on the bedmat in a pile. I can haul any bikes, any how, anywhere in whatever e-peen forum fashion opinion of the week is current.

 

I asked someone before, but I would be concerned with dirt getting between the tailgate and pad. Ever have any issues? Any scratching? I thought about picking one up before.

I've never had any problems with that. I pretty much only take it off when I wash my truck and have never seen anything that wasn't there before. I think if you keep the straps tight enough then dirt shouldn't really get in there. Its also got a softer material on the tailgate side to help prevent scratch.

I'll be honest though, if I had $500 to blow I would totally get a Kuat rack. Those things are really nice and my local shop carries them. Otherwise I'm happy with the pickup pad. It also leaves enough room for my gear. My only limit is that I have a regular cab so people have to sit in the bed haha

 

I like having the bikes inside for all of the obvious reasons. I have had as many as 5 stuffed in back w/ front wheels and gear but it takes some creativity. These 3 are all 29ers

When I was in my 4runmer I picked up a lightly used kuat for $350 and it is pretty sick. I will say that it's pretty nice not havin to take off the front wheel.


Now that I'm back in a Tacoma I put my delta mounts in the rails, I picked up a fork up for my 15mm. I think I might still keep the kuat?
