This is my mutt I found/rescued I guess, she's a great very obedient. I've been able to teach her basic things like, sitting, not chewing on stuff besides her toys, when I open the door to let her in she sits until I tell her to come in. I was not able to spend enough time with her when she was a puppy, my parents had 50/50 custody. At first I was taking her back and forth, but the step children and their mom refused to help out with when I'd go somewhere. So I decided to leave her at my moms since she and her husband were willing to help out when I'm not there. Anyways my point here is that I wasn't able to teach her to walk on a leash. I'm now at my moms full time and I can spend a lot more time with her. Since its cooling off I'd like to start taking her on walks, but every time she sees me with a leash in my hand she'll smell it and then take off somewhere.

I tried again today and she smelled it and went into her kennel and refused to look at me. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Good news! It's usually easy to break a dog of being leash shy. Start by putting it on her in the house and giving her treats or food. If she flips out and start running all around, let her. Don't pull her around with it, don't snap it, or anything that makes the leash more scary than it already is. Once she finishes (or gets tired) of flipping out, take it off.

Eventually, the goal is to get her used to it and associate it with a treat or other good thing (like praise and what-knot). Do this in short spans at first, and gradually leave it on longer and start walking around with it on (but not pulling her around).

This has worked for me in the past. But if she never gets used to it, might want to see a trainer that can work with the dog directly.

Food. Begin by associating the leash with a treat-best to start out with something really good-liver treats or something. Then work on getting the collar on and the leash hooked up, treats for good behavior.

After that, you'll be on to healing and for that, I'd suggest a puppy class for both leash training and socialization.

Good looking dog too! Best of luck to you both!

    Great looking pup!

Thank you very much! I'll start trying that and hopefully come back with some good results.

Thank you! I need to invest in some special treats I guess. The weird thing is, she loves her collar. The other night I gave her a bath, because her hair gets really oily and dirty fast. After I took her out she was shaking and scared, then I grabbed her collar from the counter and her whole mood change. When I put it on she was acting like she hasn't seen me in weeks. She used to hate it, but loves it now, so there is some hope for the leash:D

Here's family dog Mobil. My dad found him near a Mobil gas station in september of 2001, and thats why we named him Mobil. He is about 12 or 13 years old his back legs are going out, losing his eyesight, and his hearing isn't that great now. But it sure didn't seem that way when my dad was in heat, I've never seen move around so fast in my life haha.

I have a 2010 DCSB and with the rear seats folded away, the hard plastic was hard for the dogs to stand up on. I took some inexpensive auto carpet and cut it up into custom sized "inserts" for the bottom of the bottom part of the seat.

    holy picture fest batman!

Can anywhere share some advice-resources even for an issue me and a buddy are having about his dog.

He is an american pit, (Very loving and sweet) he has had a problem with his rear legs, He would sometimes favor both or one, It would get really bad and then next thing you know he only has a slight limp. We both think he might have bad hips but im kind of concerned because last night he went jumping into a wood pile and got hurt pretty bad, He favored both rear legs for hours like using only his front and then he would favor one or the other...

Anybody have any advice as to what may be causing this? Anybody recommend a good place for an x-ray its gotta be a low cost we are both pretty strapped for lose change so we are really trying to get an answer but if anyone has any insight or recommendations please free feel :D

    Thanks guys!

sounds like he needs to be kept on a leash/kenneled for a week or so, with limited activity to see if it goes away. and definitely NO jumping for the week. If with the restriction he doesn't get better, then definitely a trip to the vet is in order.

Yah i kind of was thinking that could help, He hasnt stopped any activity (hes a trooper) hes actually getting muscular in his front chest and arms. Its crazy!

Anything that could aid in the restriction week? Heat? Ice? anything special like pill or cream or anything like that?

Not sure on that... Just the restriction - that's all I've done to my girls when they have been hurt. But their issue hasn't been bad hips, so the rest has helped them. I know it's gonna be hard if he's a real active dog.

    How old is the dog?

Dogs can safely be given Chondroitin & Glucosamine made for humans. Just cut the dosage in half. My last shepherd had arthritis and it helped quite a bit.

You got bunches of reasons for a limp. Age plays a role in it too. If you aren't certain the reason for it, probably best to let a vet take a look. But don't be afraid to turn down their medications if you think its overkill. Vets are notorious for over-medicating for profit. More so than people doctors! You can look up most diagnosis on the internet now-a-days and make a determination.

My pointer sprained a shoulder a while back, and he wouldn't take it easy on it either. So I had to keep him in the house for a while to make sure he healed correctly. If the lameness doesn't go away or subside in a few days, time to go to the vet.

I have also had dogs get the same symptoms from Lyme. One leg started getting lame, but went a away after a while. Lyme seems a lot less serious in dogs than in humans, I have seen worse problems from the Lyme vaccine than the actual Lyme disease in my dogs. But again, if it's not subsided in a few days, vet time.
