I've realized getting that 5th wheel from you was both good and bad. I'm happy to finally have a full size spare again but now I have to wait even longer for these tires to wear out before I can get the ones I want. Haha

    Uh oh!

Is it time to ride the current tires really hard so you can justify buying new ones? :D

Very nice ^ Seeing your truck I kinda wish I had stuck with 265's instead of moving up to 285's...

    255-265 > 285+ on 33" of tire or less :)

35"+ is obviously a different ball game.

I have 265s now and really want to jump to 285s. Why do you wish you hadnt had the jump. Please share so maybe I wont spend money on tires and get these wheels instead!

Such a clean truck and beautiful scenery! Thank you! I could look at photos like this all day and never get tired of them.

I can't speak for Jaime, but speaking from personal experience:

265/75R16 works better with 1.75" or less of lift. With a 1.75" lift you really don't have to modify any plastics or mud flaps at all.

    285/75R16 works better with 2.25" - 3.0" of lift.

Furthermore, 285/75R16s are going to be a little heaver due to the extra material/mass of the tire, and the overall diameter is going to make your gears a little longer, so it's a little harder to get the truck going from a stop / slow speed, and you'll also reduce your gas mileage.

Depending on how heavy duty your offroading activities are, and depending on your exact suspension setup, you may benefit from one tire size over the other as well.

Man, thank you so much for that reply. I only do small light off road stuff. I do like the look of the bigger tire so maybe I'm better off with the smaller tire as gas is so darn expensive. Thanks again.

With 16x8 konigs, the 285/75/16 tires, and a full 3" lift, is it likely that I'd have to trim the mudflaps or anything else for clearance?

You might also need to do a cab mount chop too.

ya, mudflaps will have to come off and you'll need to add a bit of caster. To stay safe offroad with suspension cycle you'll need to hammer your pinch weld and possible body mount chop.

Yep that's about it. I've traded quite a bit of get up and go, and definitely mpg, for essentially 1/2" of extra ground clearance. Granted I picked the heaviest 285 tire possible (Toyo M/T's = 68 lbs ), but I wanted maximum offroad grip and the toughest sidewalls for the terrain down here in AZ.

Yaozer I also had to trim quite a bit of the fender flares and inner fender plastic, in addition to the pinch weld and everything else SconnieHailer and bullaculla mentioned.

285's do look badass though :D

Thank you bullaculla , SconnieHailer and Jaime for your responses and input. The more first hand info we have the better. :)

No problem! That's what we're here for. :) If you have a 1.75" - 2.0" lift the 265/75R16 tires will fill up your wheel well very well and look great.

If you go 2.25" - 3.0" and you really want a larger tire, but don't want to sacrifice as much gas mileage and acceleration (and you don't do heavy duty crawling and hard core offroading) you can always go with a 285/75R16 A/T (all-terrain rather than an aggressive M/T tire like Jaime). It will be lighter, have less rolling resistance and the overall diameter will be a little bit shorter than an M/T tire in the same size.

If the tire is an all-terrain (A/T) I've installed enough to say with almost 100% certainty for all brands that you won't have to do the cab mount (aka body mount) chop. You'll just need to trim and/or remove mud flaps, trim the fender liner, and possibly trim a small portion of the inside of the plastic over fender (all easy to trim plastic parts that won't be noticeable once trimmed).

Alternately, as bullaculla, SconnieHailer and Jaime mentioned, I have installed enough 285/75R16 M/T (max terrain aka mud terrain) tires to know that you will likely have to do the body/cab mount modification.

Even though the sizes are the "same," M/T tires just about always run wider and taller than their A/T counterparts.

Let me know what tire you are planning to get, and I'll go over the dimensions and potential modifications with you.

    Hmm... I'd rather run a 265 MT than a 285 AT :D

I know this isn't the correct thread so this will be the LAST question I ask here about tires. Does anyone have any experience with P235/85r16s? I'm finding that they are 1/2" shorter than 285s and they don't affect the speed/gears as much. Thoughts?
