Base Model rims black?

    I prefer Flat black for the stockies. Gloss paint draws the eye to the rims which the basic design doesn't really warrant.

    I get my rims "static balanced"-Wheel weights on the inside only. I don't mind if they marr the paint on the inside of the rim.

    You can also look at products like Equal- which is put inside the tire and balances it using centripetal force.

    What type of paint was used for the wheels? What kind of prep work was done before the paint went on? Did you leave the wheels on the vehicle when the paint was sprayed?

    Just noob questions, I want to try this on my truck and save me some cash for now until I order the ones from Rebel Racing.

    There are tons of threads around about how to.

    I took them off the truck, cleaned them good, sanded with wet 800 grit, primer (X2), paint (x3), cured in the house overnight and remounted.

    I thought about all that stuff too. before I did mine a couple weeks ago. Here's what I did.

    Washed the rims really well
    Wiped down with a solvent (brake parts cleaner)
    Taped around the edge of the tires so I wouldn't get too much paint on them
    Sprayed first coat (Rustoleum Flat Black Enamel for Industrial Applications)
    Let cure 24hrs
    Second Coat
    Let cure 24hrs
    Removed tape and sprayed any spots that were covered by it
    Third coat
    Let cure 24hrs

    You probably don't need to wait so long between coats. I did because my truck isn't drivable at the moment and I had plenty of time to finish.

    I did my wheels when almost new so I had to deal with minimal knicks and scratches. I used 400 grit sand paper to prep and prep-all to clean the surface when done.

    Started with two coats of primer, sanding out any runs or defects when finished and cleaned again with prep-all. I removed the tires from the truck ( I thought it would be easier lying flat on ground) and taped off the silver outside lip. I didn't find it neccasary to tape the tire as the paint comes right off when finished. 2 light coats of the Duplicolor satin black wheel paint waiting 30min or so between and one final wet coat.

    Duplicolor has a how to vid on there website if you feel the need to check it out. The finish has held up perfectly over the 16 months since I did it. Easy to do, Good Luck !!!

    thanks guys, i have been debating this for a while, and i haven't really seen any stock rims blacked out...i like the look of flat black but it seems like its not even.

    LOL, I dripped some gear oil on that one and haven't had a chance to clean it off all the way. :)

    I usually run my truck through the local drive-thru car wash, think the paint will hold up to that?
