Shoot it before you buy it. The .40 round tends to have a good bit of kick to it. Not such a good thing, especially on a small personal defense weapon. They tend to jump around quite a bit.

^^^ Good call. I was thinking I wouldn't mind the .40 for a self defense situation and I would convert to 9mm at the range. My brother-in-law has a micro sized Kimber in 9mm which had a bit of recoil so I should do more research.

You have to think about the second shot. The muzzle flip of the .40 is gonna take longer to recover from than the 9mm. Pretty important in an SD situation.

John is your new shield eligible for the recall?

My XDs was recalled, but I'm going to wait a little bit before I send it in. Let the gunsmiths learn on other peoples guns (from what I've read it's pretty much every XDs they've made so far) and then I'll send mine in towards the end of next year/beginning 2014.

FWIW, my XDs has about the same recoil as my old CZ P06 (compact .40 all metal.) I think it has something to do with the poly frame "absorbing" it.

penguins, if you're looking into subcompacts, Sig has a few different offerings to look at (P224 and P250sc) and also look at Kahr's. I really like Sigs P224...it's a compact version of the P229.

Have not shot it, but if it's simply a brass/nc version of their regular black box stuff it will suck. But at least the brass is reloadable!

I don't think it is, but I should probably do some looking in to that. I have not even shot it yet. Just bought a Bianchi IWB though.

If you need ammo or a firearm you better act fast as the latest " gun thing " will push production back again.

Production is at an all time high. If you mean it will push more people into hoarding, then that could well be the case. But I am finding more ammo available now than last summer, with the exception of .22LR. This kind of consistant demand makes people get into the ammo business or expand their production capacity, not the other way around. Look at all the Tula and Serbian Privi Partisan ammo that has hit the market....not a coincidence. And I find that steel and brass cased Tula is excellent range ammo in .45acp. Right on par with Winchester White box FMJ. Plus when shooting steel cased ammo I don't even care to pick up my emptys, just run a magnet over it lol. I have plenty of empty brass to reload. :D

Muzzle flip is a function of the weight of the firearm, length of the barrel, and the muzzle energy of the round. For instance, I find that my wife's XDS-9mm with it's 3.3" barrel has MUCH more muzzle rise than my full size 1911 with a 5" barrel. The difference in weight (the 1911 weighs almost twice what the XD-s does) makes all the difference in percieved recoil.

Thanks for the suggestion! Also curious if you or others have much experience with the Sig P238? My brother-in-law does not usually recommend hammer fired pistols for sub-compact. Seems to think too much crap can get in there. I'm reading the reviews on the web but always get quality feedback from TW guys on all firearm questions so throwing that out there :)

Would the P938 be a firearm you would put into comparison with the P224/P250/Shield?

I've fired a Kahr and wasn't too fond of the trigger. I'll read up on them a little more though before making a decision.

^^^ I should also add that I current own an M&P 9c for CCW and am very happy with it, if that should be a factor in the Shield/P224/P938 discussion. Ultra reliable, decent trigger even without replacing the sear, easy breakdown. Never a hint of problem after 1K rds.

Just ordered an undisclosed number of 8# jugs of powder and 10k CCI small rifle primers.

Nice! I just replaced my old RCO with an ECOS-G and a new LaRue RCO mount. Can't have too much LaRue stuff.

    I'd get the P938 before the P238 simply due to caliber (938 is 9mm, 238 is .380.)

I have an XDs (striker) and a P226 MK25 (hammer.) Not really sure why a hammer would be bad on a subcompact. The P250 is DAO (striker), and the P224 is either DA/SA or DAO (Sig's DAK trigger.)

If you already carry a MP9c, I'm not really sure you'd be "gaining" anything by getting the P224 or P250sc since it is already roughly the same size (P250 is slightly larger than P224 in height.)

If you're looking into a single stack to go even thinner than your MP9c, then look at the Shield, XDs, or the Kahr's CW or CM family. All are available in 9mm flavor.

With fall/winter coming up you'll have no problem concealing your "thicker" double stack, so I'd take some time to determine what it is exactly that you want, research your options, and handle as many as possible. I shouldn't talk though, since I went to the LGS looking for a MP45c and walked out with an XDs.

300 rounds of Tulammo .40 Target from Walmart. It's nice seeing so much ammo back on the shelves again.
