The manual for my 97 2WD says that the rearend uses straight 90 weight SAE Hypoid gear oil. I can't find straight 90 weight in the stores. Is there any other weight suitable for use in the rearend?

Well, I bought some 80W-90 Valvoline and did the rearend and tranny today after work. Very simple job. I was surprised at how thin the gear oil was. I feel better now that I've changed it. Next is a radiator flush and some new antifreeze to replace the brown stuff in there now. :D

Should use the dealer antifreeze--store bought stuff doesn't mix well with the Toyota Long Life coolant.

I am going to preface this with by saying I am a Lucas oil fan. On the rear diffs of my hotshot trucks I used a 50-50 combo of gear oil and Lucas Oil Stabilizer.. workes good for me.
Speaking of radiator flushes has anyone heard of using Cascade(like for the dish washer) as a flush? My day job, I have 8 trucks from 3/4 ton to big rigs plus 7 forklifts I am in charge of. I am currently having the forklifts -all fluids changed --bi annual PM service. The mechanic service is doing this on site for the first time and they are using Cascade for the flush, having us run the units 1 day after adding Cascade. Then flushing system.
In the past, we always had the forlifts taken to the mechanics shop via tow trucks for bi annual service, got a rental forklift for the PM service time. Times are tight so they are doing it on site.
I have never heard of this..has anyone else? The Mech. doing the Pm is telling me use 1/2 a box for my taco to flush. This same shop has been our go to mechanic shop for over 10 yrs, I talked to the owner today and he swears by cascade for radiator flushes...just blew me away..never would have thought of that.

Sounds bad to me. Use a 50/50mix of water and white vinegar to flush. then re-flush with water. Then Refill with new coolant.

When you mix yota pink fluid with green anti-freeze it turns brown and yucky.

Vinegar should never be used, it is acidic!!! and; that is basically what antifreeze breaks down into if you have used this technique I would be running a mix of baking soda and water (arm and hammer) to neutralize the acid, Acid will eat aluminium!

My father-in-law uses white vinegar to strip the coating off of his NEW rain gutters before painting them (this lets you know how caustic vinegar can be)

I have read all the different opinions about what is the best synthetic to use.
Everyone has a personal preference. Today I called over 20 Transmissions shops to find out what they use. It ranged from Amalie, Merc V, to Valvoline. I found this White Paper on 14 lubes and decided this was as close as I was going to get to an objective analysis. Yes it was conducted by Amsoil and No I am not affiliated in any way with their firm. I am just an 'old school' - back yard mechanic that wants proof. So I figured if they published it and they were not Sued by any of the companies they mention in the report there must be some validity. For what its worth I share my findings. Today is Oct. 29, 2009 the report was from 2007. I have been looking for 2 days to find any objective information --- here is the link if you wish to peruse for yourself. I am a new member and hope this is OK to report.

Happy Birthday Karen I love you!:D

It is interesting that different lubes had superior properties in certain tests. I was ready to buy Redline(especially when "Red" showed us his rear end pictures").
When I called the Transmission Shops most of them use
Valvoline MaxLife yada yada, I was about to go with this brand when I discovered that it has additives that supposedly works on regenerating the SEALS I have read on many forums that this is a big mistake!

    Q. Does anyone have any experiences with brands of gear lube that refresh the seals and have done damage?

Q2. I have an Electronic Locker in the rear end, I believe this rear end DOES NOT NEED (LSD) LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL ADDITIVES, is this a correct assumption.
I hope to hear from many of you, I just bought a bunch of parts to put on my tacoma, arb bull bumper and headlight grill guard, warn 8000# winch, supercharger, timing belt, water pump, tensioners, etc,.
I read some of the threads and found the website with all the mods and pixs that was cool. I ramble on so I better stop!

    Yes...absolutely.
If you have the TRD E-locker, you do not need the LSD additive. Look at your owners manual to get the proper oil required.
