    I have a 2013 DC V6 with 645 miles.
I have always done my own oil changes on my other vehicles. I am not interested in the free ones from Toyota.

At what mileage do you recommend it is safe to change to Mobil 1?

    Thanks for your help.

Anytime, my 4 cyl. came factory filled with synthetic. 645 miles is a little early, I'd wait to at least 1000 or 2. V6 take 5W-30, so you know.

I switched right around 1,000 miles. I was like you, no interest in the "free" oil changes.

Free is good.... Take advantage of that while you can and keep some coin in your pocket. God knows, you've already given Toyota enough $$!!

I changed to Mobile 1 at 2700 miles. I never had 'freebies'.

A little of this and a little of that.
Same with me. 1,000 miles. Mobil 1 & new Toyota filter.

I enjoy changing the oil & filter in my vehicles. I'm not against taking advantage of the free changes from Toyota, if that's the best option for your circumstance.

I cant speak for all dealers, but I know at the one I work for if a customer wants to, they can PAY the difference to upgrade to mobile synthetic. They would still be enjoying all the free aspects of the service and just paying the difference in the cost of the oil.

Regular Mobil 1 isn't a true synthetic anymore. You want Mobil 1's true synthetic, you have to buy Mobil 1 Extended Protection.

Don't believe me, look it up.

The dealer told me that the first free oil change is at 10k. There is no way in hell that I will wait that long.
The time it takes to drive to the dealership wait for it and drive home I can do it myself and then I know its done right.

In 30 days they want me to bring it to check that everything is working properly. They stated they hook it up the to the computer to check everything. Seems odd to me that they would do this without a reason. Seem like there looking for something.

    Any thoughts?

Do you have the V6? The V6 has 5,000 mile intervals. The 4-cylinder has 10,000 mile intervals and comes with synthetic from the factory (I believe).

Your dealer isn't using the correct service interval for the V6 then. I have the V6 and just did my second Toyota Care oil change (with M1 upgrade) at 10K. My first oil change on the truck was to M1 at approximately 1,000 miles.

The 4 cyl models might be using a 10K interval these days with the 0w-20 synthetic, but a 4 cyl owner will need to chime in on that topic.

The "hook up to the computer" thing seems a little wonky to me. Anything that is "wrong" with the truck that the computer will see should be throwing a code on the dash. I wouldn't bother with it. If it was a required and/or recommended service by Toyota, they'd reference it in the manual and/or maintenance logbook.

If you really want to see how the oil you are using is doing, have the dealer or if you DIY, take a sample of the used oil and send to Blackstone Labs for a Used Oil Analysis (UOA). I have found based on my research that M1 is terrible in turbo applications and you couldn't pay me to run it in my STi (I use German Castrol Syntec 0w-30 with 3,400 mile OCI), but I haven't heard too much negative about the M1 on the Toyotas.

I will probably run a UOA at 15K to just see what's going on and then maybe run one every 10K to see what's going on in there. You could argue that 5,000 miles on a synthetic is borderline too low, as if it's easily mileage 7,500 to even 10,000 wouldn't really hurt it, but I err on the side of running low intervals (maybe even foolishly).

    I have a V6. That's what the salesmen told me 10k.
