Could be. All in all, I think I need to upgrade to a newer camera

I might feel dumb for asking, but why do you say that?

edit: im mostly talking about pic 2, alittle about pic 3

The dog pics were shot with a Canon 50mm f/1.4. I agree about the 2nd shot, it was kind of a spur of the moment shot though lol

For starters that is a dx lens for crop cameras and the D800 is a full frame camera. If your shooting with a 36 mp camera you will want to use the best glass you can with it. Preferably nikons pro glass. Ideal if you plan on getting a full frame camera in the future is spend your money now on fx lenses. Theoretically now you'll get a little more reach (not really) with the crop sensor because it can't view the entire view the lens provides. When you get a fx camera you won't have to buy all new glass for it and the best of both worlds now.

Thanks for that, Murph. I didn't see the question.

It's not even just a matter of full frame vs crop. It's also a matter of 36mp vs 12-24ish. The D800 is going to be crippled by consumer glass, even if its FX glass.

Shay, IF for some reason you end up with a D800 before having any "pro" lenses look into some primes. They are cheap as dirt compared to pro lenses and super sharp/fast.

Even 1.8s instead of their 1.4 counterparts will perform much better than consumer zooms by a long shot. Just an idea for ya.

That 50 1.8 is a sweet lens. Cheap to buy too. It's funny now how so many people want a 50mm. It was just a normal lens that basically covered the camera mount and got put in the bag and hardly used in the film days. My Nikon FG in 1983 came with the 50 1.8 series E.

Hey all, I got my first paying gig. I'm taking photos for my college. They're having a "preview days" and I'll be taking photos of them in groups, classes, doing activities, etc.

Any tips for a newb? I'm just going to being a few primes and shoot what I think looks best to my eye but if anyone had tips for this setting I'm willing to listen/learn.

I'm shooting for the next three days all over campus and a few places around town.

This is part of the email I got:

    Photo Requirements
Photos that tell stories—close up faces in action, laughing, talking, moving
    Funny photos
Photos that tell context—group photo, soccer tournament photo with people watching
Must be edited to the best 5-15 shots per time frame (best 15 Lincoln tour, best 10 academic shots, etc.). Only 30 photos will be chosen to be put on Union's Facebook page showcasing Preview Day weekend.

Okay. I'm all new to this for choosing a camera to get. I understand I would need better lenses for the 800, but what is the difference between full frame and a crop camera? And what type of lenses would I need to look up? fx lenses?

EDIT: This one instead? Omg these lenses are so expensive compared to dx.. lol http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/729950-USA/Nikon_2191_AF_S_NIKKOR_28_300mm_f_3_5_5_6G.html

The difference is the dimensions of the sensor itself

Here is the thing... "All in one lens" rarely do the job well

If you want a all day fx lens then looks towards the 24-120 f4

If you are dead set on the 300mm focal length save up for a 300mm f4

As with any hobby, you gotta pay to play

    Stick with one lens

Don't stand in one spot and take snapshots. Look at things at different angles

Get a prime and a tele. Then a wide if you need it.

Or a wide, three primes, and a tele :)

    I like primes a lot.

I would like to do moon shots so that's why I was wanting a 300mm. I guess it's not a need, but would be nice. I'm mainly just looking for 2 lenses. A 300mm for moon/distance shots and a lens that will do well for star/night time shooting as well as sharp day pictures.

I can mount my 70-200 and switch my camera into "crop mode" and I gain an extra 100mm of "focal" length (all it does is crop the image to DX sensor size in camera)
